Now that I’ve been open about my predispositions, it’s time for one more confession: I am an easy mark when I see an appealing single barrel release. The single barrel versus small batch wars rages on, with me sitting on the sidelines an interested observer. I intellectually understand the skill required in blending together the ideal barrels to create a small batch release. I’ve owned more than my share of Cadenheads (now sadly defunct) small batch releases, which regularly hit a sweet price point with appealing distilleries at cask strength. The Taste Master award for the most impressive expression in the competition went to an Australian whisky, Starward Fortis, after the judges retasted all of the Master medallists. Interested in more whisky stories? Here are a few stories to get you started: Alternatives to Single Malt Whiskies Not From Scotland Whisky Types Starward has three whiskies in its core lineup, along with other rotating limited offerings. For the broadest picture of the distillery's output, I tried the three core bottles along with the latest limited offering, all of which are described below.

We may sell, license, transfer, assign or in any other way dispose of the Service (including Members) to any third party without any notification to you, e.g. (but without limitation) in connection with any reorganization, restructuring, merger or sale, or other transfer of assets. The panels swapped Australasia for North America as Canadian whiskies were sipped next. Two Masters were given to Proximo Spirits for its Pendleton Original and Pendleton Midnight whiskies. There is a high degree of quality expected when a cask has been chosen as good enough to be released in this form. Let’s see how it measures up. Starward Single Barrel Australian Whisky – Review

The whisky behind window 19: Starward Nova

A few things make Starward's whisky-making process unique. One is that the distillery ages its whiskies in wine barrels (typically red wine), imparting more complex flavor than you'd get from, say, new oak barrels. The unique climate of Melbourne, Australia, where the distillery is located, also allows for much shorter maturation times than is typical, due to the city's "four seasons in a day" climate, a process that Starward refers to as "elemental maturation." Chou said of the former: “Toasted oat, stone fruit, citrus peel, leather, coffee, chocolate, very long finish, complex aroma, well balanced, very smooth with a rounded texture.” On the nose: immediately this dram strikes with appealing fruit scents like pineapple and banana, then coconut flakes, strawberry bubble gum and lilac. There are no off notes here though time with the dram doesn’t reveal much else. Eventually reveals dark honey and caramel. Nova borrows from tradition but breaks away from it too. This whisky’s distinctly delicious flavour all starts with our new-make spirit. Ahhh, the alure of the single barrel release. I’ll admit to anyone who asks that I’ve never been the biggest supporter of Starward, but I cannot elucidate exactly why.

A Gold winner was found in the next flight, India, for Indri Dru Single Malt Indian Whisky. One judge found it to be on “the sweet side, with a good spicy chilli heat, nutmeg, Sichuan pepper, and cinnamon”. Far from stellar. “No va” translates into Spanish as “doesn’t go,” and unfortunately that’s the case with Nova. It doesn’t go to the stars, or anywhere good; it doesn’t really go much of anywhere at all. The final team was made up of David T Smith, spirits writer, consultant and co-founder of the Craft Distilling Expo, who chaired Keegan Menezes, independent rum consultant, and Julia Nourney, independent spirits consultant.

Hot off the press

In the mouth: Feels weak throughout. There’s a winey-woodiness and a malty note at midpalate before this falls over into a finish punctuated by tart flavors of grape stems and a subtly acrid and bitter taste of crabapples. This fades fast, with a brief nutty note and more stale astringency. Conclusions

For whisky fans, Kavalan has emerged as a cult favourite, with even prominant whisky critic Jim Murray observing that the brand “has that very rare talent for brilliance without apparent effort”. The Solist Vinho Barrique Single Malt is a perfect example of this. The producer works on a slightly different model than most, opting to cut maturation time where possible. Master Blender, Ian Chang has previously stated that he will “almost certainly never” release anything older than ten years, so what winds up in the bottle is young, pure and full of stunning wood expression. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise. Excluding Japan and India, judges turned their attention to single malts from Asia. Twelve Golds and one Silver were dished out, all to Taiwan’s Kavalan Distillery. Among the Gold medallists were Kavalan Podium Single Malt Whisky with its “tropical fruit-led nose” and “toffee sweetness”, Kavalan Concertmaster Port Cask Finish Single Malt Whisky, described as “woody and earthy on the nose, with plenty of charred oak, bitter chocolate and orange”, and Kavalan Solist Ex-Bourbon Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky, which impressed with its “vanilla and toffee aromas, milk chocolate, espresso and caramelised bananas”. Interest in whisky being made in countries outside of the traditional nations of Scotland, Ireland, and America is flying high. As consumers face price hikes for well-known brands, and deal with tighter purse strings, there are boundless opportunities for drinkers to explore whiskies being made from Asia, Canada, and South Africa, to European countries such as Wales and Denmark. Concluding the trio was Forest Whisky from Cheshire in the UK. Gorn described it as “rich and sweet with some lovely toffee apples and floral notes” while Neotia enjoyed its “spicy tingle” and finish of “long-baked apple and walnut”.Vitalis: The distillery's most premium limited offering to date, which was released at the tail-end of 2022 (so it missed out on SFWSC) to commemorate the distillery's 15th anniversary. It's a single malt made with whisky aged between 4 and 10 years in red wine, tawny, bourbon, apera (an Australian sherry-like wine) and rum barrels. How do Starward Australian Whisky's Expressions taste? Starward Nova Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. I am a little disappointed that this release was initially aged in a red wine cask from the Barossa Valley before being finished in a charred American oak hogshead. For better or worse, I was looking forward to the unfiltered red wine cask experience. Finish: Short to medium length finish that continues being very dry and tannic. It finishes on a note of red Pez candy and grape. The dry, winey forward finish makes you wonder if you have just taken a sip of wine rather than whisky. Nose / Like we took bright flavours of red berries and orchard fruit and coated them in soft oak spice.

Perez Terrado offered some insight: “The flight showed the huge quality in the category, and there was plenty of oak influence and interesting maturation in warm climates. It shows good diversity and plenty of boldness on show.”A lone entry from Japan, Small Batch Pure Malt Hatozaki, secured the top Master accolade. Chou found notes of “oat, bread, toast, porridge, raisin, plum, and vanilla”, with a “good balance of sweetness and spiciness” on the palate, and a “rich and rounded texture”. The former had a “fruity, slightly nutty aroma with japaleño and chilli notes”, while the latter offered “pear drops” on the nose with a “deliciously fruity palate”. The most acclaimed flight of the competition was Australasia single malts, in which seven Master medals were given out, including two to Starward and Lark. While Starward might be the most well-known whisky from Mainland Australia, the most popular whisky from Tasmania is Sullivan’s Cove. Makers of many high-quality, noteworthy single malt whiskies, Sullivan’s Cove has won numerous awards for its Double Cask Tasmanian Single Malt. This non-chill filtered winner of the “Best Australian Single Malt” at the 2018 World Whiskies Awards gets its name from being matured in both French and American oak barrels. The result is a bold, rich, memorable sipper with notes of raisins, dried apricots, sweet caramel, maple candy, and toasted vanilla beans. It’s a sweet, fruity dram you won’t soon forget.
