Oedipa’s quest is disorientating for everyone, but above all for her. The more she attempts to uncover truth the more fiction she has to spin to get there, and the more fields of enquiry she has to delve into. Her search becomes so farcical that ground on which to stand and understand becomes more elusive not less. Randolph Driblette, director and actor in The Courier’s Tragedy, is less convinced by following fiction. He suggests to Oedipa that “the only residue in fact would be the things Wharfinger did not lie about”, but if Oedipa learns anything it is that fiction does not treat of truth and lies in a binary manner. Vandals tagged the University of California, Santa Barbara campus and parts of Isla Vista over Thanksgiving break, making use of a symbol found in the 1966 Thomas Pynchon novel The Crying of Lot 49. The symbol, which resembles a trumpet, was spray-painted in red at various locations, including South Hall, Manzanita Village and the Daily Nexus advertising office. Most readers approach a complex novel, like a scientist approaches the world or a detective approaches a crime - with an appetite for knowledge and understanding, and a methodology designed to satiate their appetite. Oedipa, speculating to herself after seeing Roseman, realizes that she had always hoped to achieve some sort of escape through her relationship with Pierce. However, she never had actually escaped, and she now does not know what exactly she wanted to escape from. As the chapter ends, Oedipa imagines that she had been a type of Rapunzel trapped in a high tower waiting for someone to ask her to let her hair down. Pierce had tried to climb her hair up to her, but she imagines that he actually ended up falling down once her hair turned out to be only a wig. Analysis Whether or not Pierce might be symbolic of God, Oedipa’s actions in the novel are dictated and driven by his Will.
