Nevertheless, there have been countless locations proposed over history for the lost city of Atlantis, including in or near the Mediterranean Sea (Sardinia, Crete, Santorini, Sicily, Cyprus, and Malta have all been considered as possible locations) or in the Atlantic Ocean (the Canary Islands and Madeira Islands are such examples). The only mention of Atlantis by name in historical texts is in Plato’s Dialogues (written around 360 B.C.), which gives dozens of precise details about what Atlantis looked like, and where it may have been located in relation to other landmarks in the ancient world. It was this level of detail that has set many people off thinking that Atlantis actually existed. a b Sao, Ousmane; Giresse, Pierre; de Lumley, Henry; Faure, Olivier; Perrenoud, Christian; Saos, Thibaud; Rachid, Mouamar Ould; Touré, Ousmane Cherif (2008). One of these features is Mount Atlas, and one of these peoples is the tribe of the Atlantes (= the people of Mount Atlas). But Herodotos never mentions any place called Atlantis. Herodotos’ map in fact wasn’t drawn by Herodotos. a b Richard-Molard, J. (1952). "The Pseudo-boutonniers of Richat". Gouvernement Général de l'Afrique Occidentale Française Bulletin de la Direction des Mines. 15 (2): 391–401. Are you surprised by water erosion when the Sahara is a desert? Don’t. It used to have temperature weather with rainfall, lakes, and rivers. 2. Guillaume Matton, Michel Jébrak theoryPlato described Atlantis in the Critias and Timaeus dialogues 2,400 years ago. With the information previously passed on through generations by word of mouth, his are the most detailed accounts of the legendary Atlantis. So yeah – you can make something sort-of fit if you are willing to make stuff up as needed. The evidence we have says that the Sahara desert is at least several million years old. There is no evidence that western Africa was under water thousands of years ago. Ignoring fatal problems like this is a classic feature of pseudoscience. Meado, A. (2011). Richat Structure . NASA. Retrieved January 19, 2023, from https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/92071/richat-structure Evidence of Neolithic activity has also been found, with sparse, widely scattered spear points and other artefacts located northwest of the outer ring, although generally absent in its innermost depressions of the structure.

Well, the Richat Structure is indeed the location of exceptional accumulations of Acheulean artifacts – stone tools characterized by distinctive oval and pear-shaped “hand-axes” associated with Homo erectus, as well as derived species such as Homo heidelbergensis. But Acheulean technologies first developed about 1.76 million years ago, and although their disappearance is not well defined, they could have lasted until about 130,000 years ago (much earlier than the proposed time of Atlantis’ existence about 12,000 years ago).He further has to use some creative imagination to argue that the Richat structure, if it were fed by rivers and therefore filled with water, would have two rings of land and three of water. But that is not obvious at all. The rings are not discrete, not complete in places, and it’s unclear how water would fill the structure. You could count four rings of water if you look at the whole structure. Eldredge, S., & Biek, B. (2021, September 16). Glad you asked: Ice ages – what are they and what causes them? The circular isle of Atlantis was described to have a diameter of 127 Stadia. 1 Stadia = 607 feet. When you multiply 127 x 607, the result is 77,089 ft. This is equivalent to around 14.6 miles – the diameter of the Eye. More Similarities Between Atlantis and the Eye of the Sahara Dietz, R. S., Fudali, R., & Cassidy, W. (1969). People around the world are waking up to a realization that there is more to life than meets the senses. There is a growing desire to know who we are, where we come from, and what we are capable of. While these aren’t new questions, advancing technologies and exploration of what constitutes consciousness may require us to ask these essential questions in a new way. Are the Pyramids Doorways to Other Realities? Boissoneault, L. (2017, March 24). What really turned the Sahara Desert from a green oasis into a wasteland? Smithsonian.com. Retrieved January 19, 2023, from https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/what-really-turned-sahara-desert-green-oasis-wasteland-180962668/ Jimmy claims that an event that lasted 1,200 years “precisely” matched an event that was supposed to have happened in one day 100 years after the Younger Dryas ended. Also – there is no reason to think that the Younger Dryas affected the equatorial regions (the Richat structure is at 21 deg latitude). So really, it was in the wrong place and the wrong time for the Younger Dryas to be significant. This is a forced fit that is not compelling at all, but Jimmy thinks it is too amazing a coincidence not to be evidence. Soon after waging an aggressive, unprovoked war on parts of Asia, the Atlanteans were defeated by the only army willing to defend the continent: the Athenians. Amidst the battles, the Gods thrust violent tsunamis, earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, and floods upon the Empire of Atlantis. As if admitting its sins, Atlantis burst apart, dissolved into the ocean and desert, and was never seen again. Jimmy makes a lot out of the surrounding geography, that there were mountains to the north, the city was surrounded by flat plains, and opened to the Atlantic ocean to the south. There are mountains to the north, but this is hardly an amazing match. Surrounded by flat plains is not much of a precise description – surrounded by how much, and what kind of geography? The Richat is in the Sahara, so there is desert sands where there aren’t mountains, but they are not plains, nor is it surrounded.

Alleged Lost Atlantis

With oral story telling, the goal isn’t to transmit daily events but rather the morals, stories and traditions of the people. This was done by a caste of people for whom this was their primary role and often their status in such caste was determined by their ability to convey those stories accurately, where one elder / priest etc making an error would most often be corrected by others. Considering such tellings also tended to include survival critical information aswell such as crop cycles et cetera, errors would result in real penalties for errors. He further says that the dating of the death of Atlantis from 11,600 years ago “precisely” matches the date of the Younger Dryas, which was a climactic event which took place between 12,900 and 11,700 years ago. This event was a temporary return to glacial condition, with decreased average temperatures in the northern hemisphere. It primarily affected the norther latitudes, and North America more intensely. Later, the Landsat satellite took photos, giving information about the Richat structure size, height, extent, landscapes, etc. To date, it remains a major attraction, wonder, and landmark guide to the space shuttle or crew. Did you know that it has inspired even conspiracists seeking to unearth the location of the lost city of Atlantis? The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world, dubbed ‘the greatest desert’. It stretches across much of present-day north Africa, and is comparable in size to the area of the United States or China. So how come some people think that the Sahara was once the location of the lost island of Atlantis?
