Newel rails are designed to turn through 90o around the newel post (the upright post of the stair banister). They provide a continuous grip as the user reaches the bottom or top of the stairs and turns the corner. They are available in a range of sizes. A report was released in mid February 2019 following the very sad deaths of three elderly people over a three year period. The report recommended that metal hoop bed levers should have three bars and a gap between the vertical bars of no more than 60 mm to 100 mm, recommended 85 mm. In addition it is recommended that they all be fitted with a cord with cleat system to secure the lever safely under and hard up against the mattress leaving no gaps where a person could become trapped. The placement of the bed lever from the position of the pillow is also extremely important. This Solo Bed Lever is specifically designed for use on slatted beds with a lip. A bed rail can be a really handy piece of kit, particularly if you need extra help when getting in and out of bed or standing up due to weaker limbs or difficulties with balance. If you have underfloor heating, or if you have a sealed/waterproof floor, such as in a wetroom, you should avoid fixing rails into the floor. You must also consider where any services, such as water/drainage pipes and electricity cables run inside the walls or under the floor. A polished or chrome finish is attractive and hard wearing but can be quite slippery to hold, especially when hands are wet. Coping With the Emotional Impact of Mobility Limitations

Please note that the 2in1 bedrail is NOT suitable for sprung divan base beds, framed beds with loose slats or electrically profiling beds. For these beds we would recommend the NRS EasyFit Plus Bedrail P11849/P11838. A rail can be fixed horizontally to the wall 75-100mm above the bath rim (see dimension c in diagram).
