About this deal

Fill a six-inch-deep, well-draining container about three-quarters full with a sterile potting medium.

If you are seeking to see something a bit different from ordinary autumn colours, this could be the perfect choice. As if the invasive part wasn’t enough, Euonymus alatus can also be quite toxic when ingested. Both the leaves and berries of the shrub contain toxins harmful to humans and common household pets. Apply a one-inch layer of mulch around, but not touching, the transplanted cutting to aid in moisture retention, keep weeds down, and insulate the root zone. From a Transplant

Kochia trichophylla, the burning bushis a lovely ornamental annual plant with beautiful fine, lush green foliage that turns dark crimson to blood-red in the autumn. Don’t apply herbicides unless you are sure the chemicals are registered for control of kochia scoparia grass. Complicating the matter even more is the fact that kochia is resistant to some herbicides, including 2,4-D. This is a good time to seek the advice of your local Agricultural Extension Agent.

The arching stems are decorated with clusters of finely pointed leaves that droop appealingly from the branch. The plant is also called winged Euonymous because of the ridges that arise on young burning bush growth. These disappear after the stems mature. Non-native E. alatus grows in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8. It can reach heights of 15 to 20 feet with a spread of eight to 12 feet. Compact varieties may be as small as six to eight feet tall and four to six feet wide. Apply a three-inch layer of mulch in a circle around the shrub. It should start about four inches away from the stems to avoid rot and extend out about 10 inches, to help retain moisture and keep the roots cool. How to Grow Burning Bushes Pruning off affected branch portions and treating with a fungicide early in the season may restore good health. The plant will get tiny flowers in May to June that turn into tiny dangling red berries. Birds eat the berries and inadvertently plant the seeds in your garden. In rich soils, even dropped berries may sprout and become new plants. And in some states, like Massachusetts and New Hampshire, it is actually banned, due to the potential for prolific spreading via seed dispersal. Prune off any damaged branches and remove all debris, to avoid attracting and harboring pests and pathogens. Multi Stem tree: Two or more stems arising from or near ground level, growing from one root system.
