About this deal

Whether it’s on a ward or birthing centre, the guided audio has been designed to help women practise self-hypnosis to help you overcome a fear of labour and feel more calm and relaxed. Using the sights, sounds and smells from a hospital the audio puts in place triggers so your mind knows what to do when you go into labour.

As home to the largest online network of UK parents, our Mumsnet forums are a wealth of useful information and recommendations for the best items for every stage of the pregnancy journey and beyond, from the best prenatal vitamins to take before conception to the most useful TENs machines for labour. If you’re expecting a baby, you may be considering hypnobirthing, a technique that can help relieve pain and feelings of stress during pregnancy and labour. Like lots of things to do with becoming a parent though, it can feel overwhelming trying to find the right information, which is where the best hypnobirthing book comes in very handy. Hey I would definitely recommend Hypnobirthing: Practical Ways to Make Your Birth Better by Siobhan Miller (founder of the Positive Birth Company). I also enjoyed The Positive Birth Book by Milli Hill. I was absolutely TERRIFIED of giving birth but both these books have made me feel much more empowered and positive, even a little bit excited now!” (Recommended by Mumsnet user NicNac100) Our verdict Her down-to-earth approach makes her a sought after and successful hypnobirthing coach and with this audiobook you can listen to it again and again to help you prepare for birth.

Do you push during hypnobirthing?

According to The Positive Birth Company, women should use up and down breathing techniques. Up breathing is used during the first stage of labour where the uterine muscles are drawing up and your cervix is dilating to 10cm. It is a technique which is also used for helping people with insomnia and anxiety. It requires breathing in for four and breathing out for eight. Do this four times to help you breathe through a surge (also known as a contraction) - you can practise this during pregnancy. Most honest pregnancy book: Nobody Tells You: Over 100 honest stories about pregnancy, birth and parenthood Hypnobirthing teacher and Founder of The Positive Birth Company, Siobhan Miller’s name pops up again and again on our Mumsnet forums. In her book, Siobhan aims to debunk common myths around hypnobirthing while educating women so they can have more control over their body, resulting in a more positive birthing experience.

Looking for the lowdown on all things hypnobirthing in Singapore? Searching for the best classes to get clued up? We've got all the intel from a mum who's a hypnobirthing sceptic turned convert... As someone who enjoys yoga and have experience with breathing techniques for meditation etc, I can see this being useful. Obviously I won't know how useful for a few more weeks yet, though! Also, there are claims such as "Birth is not supposed to be painful!". This can make women who experience a painful birth (the majority !!) feel like they are doing something wrong and it's their fault. Breathing and relaxation are important, but I remain skeptical that by "making the birth room feel like a spa" and "use your 5 senses to relax" I can have a pain-free labor. Last hilarious thing is the advise to ask the surgeon to dim the lights and use a small light during a cesarean birth! I am not going to interfere with a surgery and tell a doctor how to do their job, and honestly would feel much safer and relaxed knowing that they can see well! For anyone who wants to have a calm and peaceful birth, this book will tell you everything you need to know about hypnobirthing and how to achieve it.There are some useful points, such as birthing positions, importance of relaxation and breathing, and explanation of the different stages of labor, but the author keeps repeating the same things over and over often using the exact same wording. There are at least 2 chapters that don't contain any new information. I found the book very repetitive. A form of antenatal education, hypnobirthing is an approach to birth that is both evidence-based and logical. With no hypnosis involved, you will learn about the physiology of birth and come to understand how labour works on a muscular and hormonal level, and, most importantly, how you can harness the power of proven relaxation techniques to work with your body rather than against it. Throughout my pregnancy, I've been trying to read several books that will prepare me for what's to come. One of the most important topic that I'd like to know more about is the process of birthing a baby. Hypnobirthing was recommended to me by a close friend who gave birth last year and told me it had helped her tremendously. So a few months before my due date, I made it a mission to finish reading this book and see what it has in store. Even though some parts of this book felt irrelevant due to the different cultures in my country, I'm still grateful I took the time to read it because it allowed me to understand what will happen during labor and delivery. I can't say much about the hypnobirthing techniques because I haven't got a chance to practice them yet, but I think it's worth trying since it sounds so logical and science-based.

So, what is hypnobirthing? Essentially, it's a form of antenatal education, an approach to birth that is both evidence-based and logical. Hypnobirthing certainly doesn't involve being hypnotised; instead, it teaches you how your body works on a muscular and hormonal level when in labour and how you can use various relaxation techniques to ensure you are working with your body (rather than against it), making birth more efficient and comfortable.
