About this deal

Yes, the megapixel count has dropped from 64MP to 50MP with the Galaxy A54, but it’s worth noting that it’s a completely new camera with a larger sensor, larger pixel size (0.8um to 1um, or 2um if you pixel-bin) and an enhanced OIS. The camera setup, at least where the main lens is concerned, looks like a downgrade – on paper, that is.

The Galaxy A54 has most features found on other phone cameras, such as portrait mode, slow-motion and super slow motion, hyper lapse, and more. Battery & Charging On the wireless side, the Galaxy A54 now supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC. You also get dual SIM support with 5G. Samsung announced the Galaxy A54 5G and Galaxy A34 5G today. The two new mid-range phones are full of surprises, with Samsung giving them a few higher-end features than usual, such as a more polished exterior, better audio during phone calls and video calls, improved Nightography and camera AI, and better displays, to name a few. The Samsung Galaxy A54 bridges the gap between Samsung’s A series and S series smartphone. First impressionsThe Samsung Galaxy A54 is a decent all-rounder with a hint of a truly premium build thanks to a glass rear and an updated design that brings it pretty close to the flagship Galaxy S23 range. IP67 support, in particular, is notable at this price point.

The main 50MP camera is another key upgrade for this year’s model, further improving performance in both well-lit and low-light conditions with plenty of light and detail on offer for the price tag. There’s a USB-C port for charging, but it’s limited to 25W so you miss out on the fastest fast charging. There’s no AC charger in the box, just a USB-C cable. More surprisingly, you miss out on wireless charging completely. Still, results across the board are fairly acceptable for the price tag. What isn’t acceptable, however, is the autofocus performance. Whatever the reason for this omission — whether it's a technical, logistical, or cost-related issue — or a mere market trend devised to sell wireless earbuds, the fact remains that the Galaxy A54 and A34 don't have a 3.5mm headphone port. Thankfully, they more than make up it through other features and improvements across hardware, software, and design. The 5MP macro lens is the most niche of the collection, and something I don’t think many people will use more than once with a fixed focus that makes it difficult to capture anything of note. The fact that the macro shooting mode is found in the ‘More’ section of the camera app, rather than one of the main shooting modes, says a lot about how Samsung views it.The easiest way to listen to audio on the Galaxy A54 is with wireless headphones. While they can certainly be more pricy than wired options, there are still plenty of wireless headphonesand wireless earbudsthat are similarly priced to wired options. On paper that sounds pretty damn impressive, especially when coupled with Samsung’s claims of two days on a single charge, but that doesn’t always reflect real-world usage. Flip the phone over and you’ll find a 32MP hole-punch selfie camera embedded into the top of the display that’s more than enough for selfies and video calls, but as you might expect, most photography should be left to the rear lenses. Performance

The Galaxy A14 also supports a Bluetooth connection to wireless speakers and other audio players, such as smart TVs. The Galaxy A14 5G uses Bluetooth 5.2, the current industry standard. When it comes to longevity, the IP67 rating also offers some reassurance with a waterproof and dustproof design that should survive a dunking. Unlike the camera bump that was found on the A53 range, Samsung has taken a design flourish from its flagship S23 handsets, the floating camera array, and has used this for the A54 range. That’s because most of said change is happening on the rear of the phone. The most immediately noticeable is that Samsung has ditched the contour camera housing present on last year’s model, instead opting for the same minimalistic design as the flagship Galaxy S23 line. The display is dynamic, dropping between 60Hz and 120Hz depending on what you’re doing, though you can also force a 120Hz refresh rate at the expense of battery life. It won’t drop down to a battery-saving 1Hz, but what mid-range phone does?

The selfie cam is 32MP (f/2.2) and Samsung says that it has deep integration with Snapchat, meaning that some of the filters found on that social network are baked into the Galaxy A54 which is a really nice move. But unlike the A53, which had a 64MP primary shooter, the Galaxy A54 uses a 50MP sensor for its primary shooter. Besides that, everything else is the same, even the selfie camera. All that said, my final impressions of the display are largely positive; it’s big enough to comfortably watch YouTube videos and movies on Netflix, colours are vibrant and punchy (if not a little too vibrant) and it’s easily legible in direct sunlight with a maximum brightness of 1000nits. I did miss elements like HDR10+ when watching Netflix though, features you can find on the likes of the Redmi Note 12 Pro Plus 5G and Google Pixel 6a. CameraWith a great 6.4-inch display, sturdy premium build, and triple camera array, the Samsung Galaxy A54 certainly makes a great first impression for a mid-range handset. You can see how Samsung is working to unify the design language of the A and range-topping S series handsets. The Samsung Galaxy A54 uses a 5,000 mAh Li-Po battery, but it supports fast charging of only up to 25W, and when you compare it to other Chinese mobile makers, they’re offering faster charging speeds in smartphones in the same price range.
