About this deal

D'Arby's debut solo album, Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby, was released in July 1987. [8] The album produced hits including " If You Let Me Stay", " Sign Your Name", " Dance Little Sister", and the number one hit " Wishing Well". [11]

In an interview, D'Arby played with the press and expressed a high opinion of his first album, claiming that it was the most important album since the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper. [1] After the comments leaked to US media outlets, he stated that most of what he said was exaggerated, but that it is sometimes necessary to "hit people over the head" to get their attention. [12] The album earned him a Grammy Award in the category Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male (1989) [13] and a BRIT Award for International Breakthrough Act, and he also received Grammy and Soul Train nominations for Best New Artist. Ben Greenman of The New Yorker credits "Wishing Well", along with other D'Arby songs, with "[bringing] soul music into the eighties". [7] Writing about D'Arby for AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine called the song "sparse funk", and noted how "Wishing Well" was his first major hit in the United States. [8] Kathi Whalen of The Washington Post credited the song's chart success to D'Arby's combination of "'60s soul and pop on top", and called "Wishing Well" "bouncy". In terms of chart-topping hits and staying in the public eye, TTD didn't live up to his own hype. His unique voice and style became irrelevant; drowned out in a sea of brilliantly marketed clones who happened to come along at a time when pop music largely degenerated. Since around the time of TTD's brief heyday, Pop/R&B/Soul so-called "artists" have rarely ventured beyond vapid songs about materialism and "bootys". In this sense, poetic musicians whose lyrics are full of wit, depth, and spirituality should be PROUD of not remaining relevant!
