About this deal

Consider the weather and seasons when planning your lighthouse adventure in Norway. The summer months , from June to August, offer longer daylight hours and milder weather, making it an ideal time for outdoor exploration. If the ceremony is in a village church, the finale of the service is not "Silent Night" but "Santa Lucia"— the same song popular in Italy but with Norwegian lyrics. As they sing, the children's choir with their leader wearing her crown of candles proceeds down the aisle and into the night, as if to spread light to the needy community. Perched on a small island in the Herøy archipelago, the Svinøy Lighthouse showcases a traditional design with its white tower and red roof. It provides stunning views of the coastal landscapes and is a picturesque destination for visitors. Skrova Lighthouse (Vågan) Norway's extensive coastline, stretching over 25,000 kilometers, has long been intertwined with its maritime history. To ensure safe navigation and protect seafarers from the treacherous waters, Norway boasts a significant number of lighthouses. These iconic structures not only serve as beacons of light but also embody the country's deep-rooted connection to the sea. Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

When the beer was brewed, the animals butchered, and the bread baked, the house was cleaned and the party began. People brought in enough wood to last the entire holiday. They gave the remaining animals a little extra hay and even lashed bundles of grain to posts outside to feed the birds. While the technology used in modern navigation has advanced significantly, lighthouses continue to hold a special place in Norway's cultural heritage. They evoke a sense of nostalgia and romance, reminding us of the intrepid sailors who relied on their guiding light in times gone by. Today, these lighthouses also attract curious travelers who seek to immerse themselves in Norway's rich maritime history and embrace the beauty of its coastal landscapes. Norway's Majestic LighthousesOverlooking the renowned bird sanctuary island of Runde, this lighthouse offers captivating views of the Norwegian Sea. It serves as a vital navigational aid for ships and provides visitors with an opportunity to witness diverse bird species. Tungenes Lighthouse (Randaberg) As mentioned, we care about the time leading up to Christmas. Every Sunday of Advent (you know, the four Sundays leading up to Christmas), we light candles – one for each Sunday.

Of course, the hotel's facilities are available to those staying in the lighthouse. Also, hotel staff will deliver breakfast baskets whenever you're ready! Dyna: A landmark of the Oslofjord The pair have made a Christmas special in Norway’s Lofoten Islands which are in the Arctic Circle, 1,000 miles north of Oslo Basically, there is a Czech movie from 1973 that has stolen the heart of the people of Norway (seriously, all of us). It was dubbed into Norwegian by a male actor, and his voice is the only (!) voice you hear throughout the movie. In Norwegian Happy/Merry Christmas is 'God Jul' or 'Gledelig Jul'. In North-Sami, spoken in northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, it's 'Buorit Juovllat'. Happy/Merry Christmas in lots more languages. The narrow alleys of the old Hanseatic city Bergen is a wonderful setting when you want to get into the Christmas spirit. You’ll find a big Christmas market at Festplassen, with a Ferris wheel and merry-go-rounds. The city is also home to the world’s largest gingerbread town. Watch as they switch on the lights at the top of the city mountain Fløien, and round off the evening with a Christmas concert. 9. Henningsvær

Each of these lighthouses holds its own allure, reflecting the unique coastal landscapes and maritime heritage of Norway. Exploring them offers a captivating journey through history, architecture, and the natural beauty that surrounds them. The lighthouse doesn't emit light all year round. Because of the Arctic latitude, the area doesn't need additional light from May to August each year thanks to the midnight sun. Even though the village is quite small, you’ll find several art museums here, too, including the KaviarFactory and Galleri Lofotens Hus. Why not round off your aesthetic experience with a tasty treat at a café, pub or restaurant? Note that some places are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Personally, it’s the highlight of my Christmas traditions, and every year on the 24th of December you’ll find me in my pyjamas in front of the TV at 11 am (as mentioned in the Christmas Eve breakdown above).

While Andenes is tall, it's not the tallest in Norway. That honour falls to the 43-metre-high tower of Sletringen lighthouse on Frøya island in Trøndelag. Sletringen lighthouse Another tradition in parts of Norway is that families light a candle every night from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day. The modern day celebration is largely based on the Church year and has retained several pre-Reformation and pre-Christian elements.

Don’t miss the lighting of the world’s most famous Christmas tree, which takes place in Trafalgar Square on Thursday the 1st of December 2022. The 25-metre-high tree is a gift from the people of Norway to London, in thanks for Britain’s support in World War II. This historic tradition has happened every year since 1947 and signals the countdown to Christmas in London. Recycling the tree A former thriving fishing village, Grip is today uninhabited. But the colourful buildings on the islands still get regular visitors thanks to the scheduled boat trips from Kristiansund. I thought I would elaborate a little more on my perfect Christmas Eve if I get my way (meaning I convince my sisters to both bring the kids home to the fjords for Christmas and make sure nobody leaves until after New Year). If you have made it this far in the post, thank you! In good, understated Norwegian fashion, houses are decorated only with white lights — never colored — in the windows. You'll see some traditional candles, but electric lights posing as candles are more common. A plastic Santa or manger scene on the lawn, or garish colored lights along the eaves would probably put you in the neighborhood doghouse. It makes sense in a land that seems to have organized itself beyond a need for God.Julebukk translates to ' Yule goat'. Today it is commonly known as a goat figurine made out of straw, created in the beginning of December often used as a Christmas ornament. The Yule Goat's oldest representation is that of Thorr's magical goats, which would lead him through the night sky. The Yule Goat was also a spirit that would protect the house during Yuletide and it was tradition to sacrifice a goat to the Gods and accompanying spirits during the time span between the Winter Solstice "Winter Night" and the New Year called romjul. It was during romjul that a goat or julebukk was sacrificed; adults then donned guises to personify the julebukk. Animal masks and skins, commonly goats and horses, were donned in an activity called "hoodening". Participants would parade from house to house, disguising their voices, singing, offering spiritual protection and warnings. The group would receive small amounts of money, food and drink in exchange for the blessing they offered. That’s right, road trip! If you’re wondering where to look for rental cars in Norway, I always find the best prices atAutoEurope. Another thing that’s worth mentioning about Christmas in Norway is that we don’t open presents in the morning.
