Hi I’m Ben O’Reilly, from Wood Finishes Direct in this video I will be discussing Floor Finishes – specifically water based Polyurethane Varnish and a Hard Wax Oils. I’m going to be discussing the best way to apply them, the pros’ and cons’ and hopefully help you decide what one is right for your floor. Varnishes

Our first piece of advice is this: always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Other than that, here are a few basic guidelines to help you make the right decision. Using a brush––usually a China bristle brush attached to a long pole––is the recommended application method for conversion varnish (also known as Swedish or acid cure finishes). Brushes are also commonly used to apply oil-based and moisture-cured polyurethane finishes. Apply a very thin coat with a fine brush or foam pad. Work in the same direction as the wood grain. To avoid raising the grain don’t apply too much at once – it’s much better to be safe than sorry, so take it easy. The first coat ought to dry in a couple of hours and while you don’t have to lightly sand (denib) between coats, professionals usually do, as it can help to achieve a smoother finish. If using a primer, 2 coats of water-based lacquer are usually enough; if not using a primer, then 3 coats may be necessary to offer optimum protection. A varnish is the most hard-wearing finish to use for wood flooring. There are 2-part varnishes available which can be mixed with a hardener prior to application, allowing the two to dry together, thereby creating a much tougher and more durable surface finish. Predominantly used by professional floor finishers, application blades are used to apply oil stains and other oil-based products to large areas. Flexible filler knifes are a must for applying a wide range of wood fillers.

Step 5 - Apply the Main Varnish Coats

Always work in a clean, dust-free, well ventilated area. If you’re varnishing a floor, open the windows and doors but try to keep draughts to a minimum in case they blow dust on your finish. Once you’ve applied, you need to get your cloth and if you have any excess on the surface as I do it’s best to work that into the wood and wipe it off. And for some application tips, the varnish I’m going to be using today is the Mann’s Extra Tough Floor Varnish in Matt. The applicator I will be using is the Varnish can be applied in any of three ways: by brush, with a roller and pad, or by spraying.
