AN INSPECTOR CALLS is directed by the world-renowned theatre and film director Stephen Daldry. Stephen’s many theatre credits include The Audience, Skylight and Billy Elliot The Musical. His film credits include The Hours, The Reader and Billy Elliot, all of which earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Director. Most recently he has directed several episodes of the Netflix smash hit series The Crown, for which he is also producer. Evlyne: “If I had to be someone out of all the characters, it would definitely be the inspector, because I’m obsessed with crime documentaries and serial killers, everything to do with murder, unsolved murder, unsolved mysteries, death row, all of that! I’ve pretty much seen everything and I re-watch it to go to sleep.” Neither Mr nor Mrs Birling feels any sense of responsibility (another theme in the play connected to justice) for Eva Smith. Gerald, while he truly regrets his part in her death, is still hard-headed enough to find out if an Eva Smith actually committed suicide when the Inspector’s authenticity is doubted. Only Sheila and Eric take on the full impact of the Inspector’s words. They feel responsibility for what happened to Eva Smith and accept that a change in society is needed. Priestley, therefore, suggests that any hope for future justice can only be with the young.
About This Show
Priestley was interested in the idea of time, and wrote several plays, such as ‘Dangerous Corner’ (1932), that included the theme of time. In ‘An Inspector Calls’ he explores the idea that time could repeat itself so that events happen again. George: “I’m sharing a room with Simon [Cotton] who’s playing Gerald. I don’t know…I think a bottle of water goes a long way. A bottle of water and some Vaseline is not a terrible idea – for the lips, obviously! I get chapped lips.” We never meet Eva Smith, and Inspector Goole is the only one who knows what happens to her. He controls when the characters see Eva Smith’s photo, so no two characters see the photograph at the same time. Perhaps they do not even see the same photo. Evlyne: “Well, the fact that is has three timelines helps. It’s set across three timelines – you’ve got 1912, which is where the play is set; then you’ve got the future, which is the Blitz, 1945, and then you’ve also got the current now, 2022.
In his possession, Goole has a photograph of the young woman and her diary - implying that she has named her tormentors within. Over the course of the evening, each member of the Birling family comes to realize they have all played a part in her downfall, in turn exploiting her, abandoning her, leading her to social and financial ruin before she finally took her own life. Faced with the maddening guilt and unable to accept the responsibility, we see one devastating night in the life of this entitled family, as they all seek to escape blame, believing their wealth and status will protect them from the consequences. It’s been over four years since I last watched Stephen Daldry’s iconic staging of An Inspector Calls, and I continue to find it an enthralling piece of theatre. The fact that this recent performance withstood the ambient noise of several hundred schoolchildren within the creaky confines of York’s Grand Opera House only serves to underline how compelling this production is.
George: “Eric is well educated because he’s been sent to public school. He enjoys a drink, probably a little bit too much. He really wants to be respected by his dad. But with acting it doesn’t work like that because being good is so subjective – there’s no grade. I think that’s quite hard. Putting lots of work in and not knowing really how it will go.”Evlyne: “For me, it’s not being able to see your work or the story you’re creating because you’re so involved and living in the moment of it. You don’t really see the end result. I feel that the end result is mainly the response from the audience; if they got the story then we’ve done our job.” An Inspector Calls is on the school curriculum, sure to attract GCSE pupils and their parents alike to next year’s tour. When the family talk over what has happened, they begin to question whether their visitor was a real police inspector. Mr Birling makes a phone call to the chief constable, who confirms that there is no Inspector Goole on the force. With a further call to the infirmary confirming that no recent cases of suicide have been reported, the family surmise that the inspector was a fraud and that they have been the victims of a hoax. Gerald and the elder Birlings celebrate in relief, but Eric and Sheila continue to feel guilt. The phone then rings and the police tell them that a young woman has just died in the infirmary in a suspected suicide, and that they are on their way to question the family. The inspector's identity is left unexplained (though a clue is in the name), but it is clear that the family's confessions over the course of the evening have all been true, and that public disgrace will soon befall them. Writer-director Daldry’s ground-breaking production has accumulated 19 major awards, including four Tony Awards and three Olivier Awards, and played to more than five million theatregoers worldwide, en route to becoming the National Theatre’s most internationally lauded show. Their peaceful family dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. Priestley, because he experienced two world wars, wants the audience to think about how to avoid another war and to consider the kind of future we want. He would like one in which we care for each other. They have never heard of him but the Inspector’s ‘massiveness, solidity and purposefulness’ take over. He describes the way in which each of the Birlings and Gerald are involved in Eva Smith’s suicide.
