About this deal

We found it more crowded than Torre San Giovanni and the sand was more golden than white. The swimming is better here as it’s not quite as shallow but still warm and calm. Vico del Gargano is a small hill town that’s one of Italy’s Most Beautiful Towns ( Borghi Piú Belli d’Italia) but is often overlooked by visitors to the Gargano. Bari is a common entry point to the Italian region of Puglia with train, flight, and ferry connections to the rest of the country and beyond. In this Bari Italy travel guide, I share our favourite things to do in Bari including the best food, how to get there, where to stay, and a map with all our recommendations. Contents

Some parts of the regions were conquered by the Muslim Saracens and the Emirate of Bari was established for a brief period by Muhammad Abul Abbas of Sicily. Puglia - Economy". Puglia tourist destinations

It was easy to drive, comfortable, and had space to lie on the cushions at the front. There’s a 10km limit on where you can go, so you can’t reach the sandy beaches north of Torre Vado. The climate is typically Mediterranean with hot, dry and sunny summers and mild and rainy winters. Snowfall, especially on the coast is rare but has occurred as recently as January 2019 (following on from snow in March 2018 and January 2017). Apulia is among the hottest and driest regions of Italy in summer, with temperatures sometimes reaching and exceeding 40 °C/104 °F in Lecce and Foggia. There is a town beach as well as stunning white sand beaches nearby at Baia di Turchi and Torre dell’Orso. And don’t miss a visit to the famous swimming hole Grotta di Poeti. There’s a long string of lidos with free sections in-between. We liked the free area just before Lido Isola Beach. Vespera Bar is perfect for toasting the sunset

The chapel features a disturbing sight—the skulls of 800 martyrs who resisted the Turkish invasion in 1480 that destroyed much of the city. Landmarks include the Roman amphitheatre, Lecce Cathedral, and the city’s many baroque church facades. This would only be preferable over Bari airport if you wanted to combine your Gargano trip with places in southern Puglia such as Lecce and Ostuni. Since 2008–2010, the olive oil industry in Apulia has been under threat from the pathogen Xylella fastidiosa, a disease that inhibits the trees' uptake of water and nutrients. The epicentre of the epidemic is the southeastern part of the region. We came here after visiting Porto Selvaggio beach, just 10 minutes away. It was very quiet on a summer morning, but I imagine it’s livelier in the evenings. Visiting a local winery is more challenging for English speakers as most aren’t well set up for visitors. One option is this wine experience at Feudi di Guagnano winery, 25 minutes outside Lecce. It’s a popular summer spot for Italians, but in the off season, you can have the beaches, forests, and hill towns to yourself. The modern part of town is nondescript, but head into the historic centre for a 12th-century castle and an atmospheric maze of grey stone houses and narrow alleyways including the tiny Vicolo del Bacio (Kiss Alley). The highlight of this quiet town is the medieval Castello De Monti. It’s one of the most impressive castles in the area and you’ll likely have it to yourself.

The Tremiti Islands are a picturesque archipelago of five tiny islands and a good place for swimming, scuba diving, walking, and boat trips to grottoes and coves. We did mostly manage without a car when we spent a month in Lecce, but we rented one for two days for day trips. Trani, along the coast, features an old settlement right around the harbor with a seafront cathedral dedicated to San Nicola Pellegrino. Several 18th-century palaces, like the Caccetta, the Quercia and the Bianchi give you a good idea of Puglia's Romanesque period. The Swabian castle of Trani was built by Federico II between 1223 and 1249 and was up to recently used as a prison. Salento is on the Salentine Peninsula (Penisola Salentina) in the southern Italian region of Puglia (also known as Apulia). It’s the tip of the heel of Italy’s boot. Should you drive or take a train in Puglia? Well, personal preference plays a part, but there is a lot to see in Puglia's countryside that might only be accessible by car. That said, rail travel in Italy is fairly inexpensive, and if you're doing a solo trip you'll save money on travel and you'll not have to deal with navigating. Your choice.
