About this deal

Martell is a cognac house founded in 1715 by Jean Martell. It is the oldest of the "big four" cognac houses (the others are Hennessy, Rémy Martin and Courvoisier), who together produce most of the world's cognac. [1] Formerly owned by the Seagram spirits empire, it is now part of the Martell Mumm Perrier-Jouët (MMPJ) subsidiary of the French wines and spirits conglomerate Pernod Ricard. [2] Martell's flagship Cordon Bleu, introduced in 1912, was for many years the world's highest-selling premium cognac. [2] In comparison to other cognac producers, Martell is the only one to distill from exclusively clear wines (impurities have been removed) to produce what’s known as eux-de-vie, which is then used to make cognac. a b Ball, Deborah (2002-11-11). The fourth Master medal of this flight went to Rémy Martin XO. With aromas of “coffee, chocolate and waxy furniture polish”, leading to “soft baking spices, soft fruit and elegant wood spice” on the palate, the judges were hugely impressed. In 1912 the marque launched Martell Cordon Bleu at the Hôtel de Paris, its first post- phylloxera cognac. While sold without designation (Martell XO is a distinct product), it is regarded as the oldest XO equivalent cognac still in production, and is widely credited as the first mass-market premium cognac. [9] Martell Cordon Bleu was served at the coronation of George V, on the maiden voyage of the RMS Queen Mary, and on board the Concorde. [10] Martell has an amazing history that spans over 300 hundred years. Surviving revolutions, trade embargos, and even being served at the armistice signing in Compiègne, France during World War I, Martell is deeply woven into the history of France. Martell is known for its elegance and tradition. Martell cognac was served at the gala dinner to celebrate the marriage of Prince Rainier of Monaco to the US actress Grace Kelly, and was even given as a gift to Queen Elizabeth II on her first visit to France! Brandy vs. Cognac: What’s the difference?a b "Profile: The House of Martell". Luxury Insider. 16 November 2011. Archived from the original on 25 November 2011 . Retrieved 3 January 2017. Since 1715, Maison Martell has perpetuated an uncompromising savoir-faire defined by the decision to age its eaux-de-vie exclusively in barrels of fine-grained oak.

Martell is one of the world’s oldest cognac producers. Founded in 1715 by Jean Martell, the company boasts an impressive line of cognacs known for their aromatics and richness. The Martell line is famous for being incredibly smooth and oaky because they’re aged in old oak casks for many years (at a minimum of two) before being bottled. A Brand with a Rich HistoryThe “red” of the barrel refers to the color of aged oak, which has housed other eaux-de-vie before it. This process will have taken place for at least 2 years and up to 8 years. This allows the spirit to reach the perfect stage of maturation. The Martell aging and distilling style is unlike no other, allowing for fantastic eaux-de-vie to be produced.

Incidentally, the reason these abbreviations are in English is because cognac has been exported for many years and the first importers spoke English. Five Gold medals made for a successful flight – including a Gold award for fellow rapper 50 Cent’s “fruity, elegant and vibrant” Branson Cognac VSOP Grande Champagne. The number of top medal winners unearthed in this year’s blind-tasting competition showed how many amazing expressions there are to investigate in the Cognac category. The 2023 tasting discovered some Master-worthy bottlings Out of the four major Cognac houses, House of Martell is famous for exclusively distilling clear wines, without the lees, to better preserve the lighter aromas of the grapes and reveal an extreme finesse. Their eaux-de-vie are then aged only in casks made from fine-grained wood sourced from the Tronçais forest in central France, giving a lighter wood influence and preserving the most delicate fruit aromas. For this VSOP, the result is a wonderful symphony of plum, quince and grape complemented by exceptionally light tannins. In 2006, Martell joined the Comité Colbert, an association that promotes French luxury houses on an international scale. It was a tough act to follow, but the following No Age Statement flight also had some strong medal contenders – three Gold winners, which were: Rémy Martin Tercet, which ad “decent length”; Rémy Martin Club, which delivered “luscious dried fruits”; and Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal, for its “nice wood and spice towards the end”.

By 2015 Martell was producing around 14 million bottles of its cognacs a year, [3] making it the world's second-largest cognac producer behind Hennessy. XO stands for “Extra Old”: XO cognacs are made only from eaux-de-vie at least ten years old. Cognacs such as “Napoleon” or “Old Reserve” are equivalent to XO cognac. The Cognac has a rather unique, luminous appearance, tempting you to enjoy its deliciously spicy aromas that have been imparted from the red oak casks in which the Cognac was aged. The ‘Tronçais’ casks refer to the fact that the trees are planted closely together to slow their growth rate which results in fine grain. It is this proximity that allows the light tannins to infuse the eaux-de-vie with aroma. Martell VSOP is the result of an uncompromising savoir-faire, which is defined by ageing eaux-de-vie exclusively in barrels of fine-grained oak.

More Alternatives…

All cognacs are brandies, but not all brandies are cognacs. In general terms, brandy is produced by distilling wine and aged in wooden casks. Cognac is brandy that is produced in the region of Cognac, France, and follows very strict distilling procedures. What is Martell cognac made from? The first quarter of 2023 has been a busy one for Cognac brands. From Hennessy’s partnership with Grammy award-winner Alicia Keys to Bacardi’s multi-billion-dollar investment in rapper Jay-Z’s D’Ussé Cognac, the category has been active. VS stands for “Very Special”: only eaux-de-vie at least two years old can be used to make a VS cognac. Other denominators and expressions are permitted, such as “3 stars” or “luxury”, and as such are included in the VS cognac category. The vintage bottling impressed so much that following the retasting of the Master medallists, it was voted the ‘best in class’ of the day – The Cognac Taste Master 2023.
