About this deal

So not for the first time (and almost certainly not for the last), Samsung has managed to hit a price-point without too many obvious compromises. It's absolutely one of the best Samsung TVs available today for those on a budget. Samsung BU8500 review: Price and release date The comparisons with rival budget TVs continue to do the Samsung BU8000 no favours when it comes to sound. Its speakers are severely short of volume and projection (especially versus the Toshiba 50UK4D63DB), and produce a much less dynamic mid-range. Anything approaching a big action scene lands with practically no impact at all, sounding thin and utterly unconvincing. Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying a live scene and white square taking up 10% of the screen (measured in Nits) Information about the maximum amount of time, in which the pixels change from one color to another. It keeps up with the pace and intricate movement of the dancers as they cross each other’s paths surprisingly well, but the penalty imposed is that sharpness and definition are further eroded. The same strengths and weaknesses pop up when watching 1917 (although artefacts are more noticeable with that film). Both movies look best without the Motion Plus setting on.

Information about the minimum amount of time, in which the pixels change from one color to another. Very often the manufacturer provides the response time for transition from grey-to-grey (G2G).

Samsung delivers another affordable 4K TV hit

Desktop monitors and smart TVs experience a latency/lag in visualizing the information. The time in milliseconds that the display needs to visualize the signal input. Taking a step down to SDR with The Amazing Spider-man 2 on Blu-ray, there’s a lot more for this set to get its teeth into, colour-wise. Watching the Times Square scene, it’s clear this TV upscales well. The shot over the neon-lit New York streets still shows tremendous micro dimming control. The lights of windows and advertising boards don’t spill into the nearby dark and the picture remains clean. The two most significant settings, though, are the Contrast Enhancer and Samsung’s Shadow Detail, the latter of which is new for 2020. Between these two, you can get an idea of just where the mid-range compromises lie in this reasonably priced TV.

Many countries receive market-specific variations of television, of course, due to differences in broadcast standards and so on – so at present there’s no confirmation of what the equivalent Samsung screen will be in other territories. What we can be certain of, though, is that both the United States and Australia will be getting a range of competitively priced, competitively specified Samsung 4K LED TVs that are more than a little reminiscent of the BU8500 series. There’s also a nicely nuanced overall feel to most types of image on the BU8500, and while it might not deliver the impact we’d ideally like, at least it tends to keep everything in balance, without the momentary losses of discipline many rivals at this price point – including the impressive TCL – occasionally succumb to.The dialogue is fairly murky, too. There’s no problem hearing or understanding what’s said, but it’s like listening with a layer of material between our ears and the characters’ voices.
