About this deal

In combat one of the Yuan-Ti purebloods tries to hold the line while the second moves into room 4 to alert its allies. If combat breaks out, the Yuan-Ti attempt to raise the alarm, calling their allies from area 9 to join the fight. Purebloods appear mostly human, with minor reptilian features, such as slitted eyes, a forked tongue, or patches of scales on their skin. They serve as diplomats and infiltrators, pretending to be human.

Alignment. Abominations are devoid of emotion and see others as tools to manipulate. They care little for law or chaos and are typically more evil alignments. Yuan-ti call themselves vrael olo (which means "favored ones"). Daily use typically uses the shortened "vrael", and can be modified to "auvrael" (meaning friendly or known yuan-ti) and "duthrael" (unfriendly or unfamiliar yuan-ti). [18] These three variants all possess the normal yuan-ti survival instinct and will retreat when seriously wounded (reduced to 35 hp or fewer), using the Disengage action if they have allies present and the Dash action if they don’t. This section assumes that you’re using the option updated versions of the race, including the “Customizing Your Origin” rules presented in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything and/or the updated version published in Mordenkainen’s Monsters of the Multiverse. Because the race changed so little between those two versions, I have decided to combine these two sections. If you’re not using those rules, scroll down to the “Classic Rules” section. Artificer Ed Greenwood, Eric L. Boyd, Darrin Drader (July 2004). Serpent Kingdoms. ( Wizards of the Coast), p. 21. ISBN 0-7869-3277-5.Serpent's Tongue. You can speak with snakes as if you shared a language. You can communicate simple thoughts and concepts with them, and they can share recent memories with you.

Trap: If a non-Yuan-Ti steps across the mosaic on the floor, the four pillars in this room animate into four Giant Constrictor Snakes with the following changes: Aversion: The yuan-ti creates a compulsion effect targeting one creature within 30 feet. The subject must succeed at a Will save (DC 17) or gain an aversion to snakes for 10 minutes. Affected subjects must stay at least 20 feet from any snake or yuan-ti, alive or dead; if already within 20 feet, they move away. A subject can overcome the compulsion by succeeding at another DC 17 Will save, but still suffers deep anxiety. This causes a -4 reduction to Dexterity until the effect wears off or the subject is no longer within 20 feet of a snake or yuan-ti. This ability is otherwise similar to antipathy as cast by a 16th-level sorcerer.Serpentine Spellcasting. You know the Poison Spray cantrip. You can cast Animal Friendship an unlimited number of times with this trait, but you can target only snakes with it. Starting at 3rd level, you can also cast Suggestion with this trait. Once you cast it, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast it using any spell slots you have of 2nd level or higher. Especially in cities because the Abomination will need food and water brought to them since they just can’t go to the market. Volo’s Guide to Monsters’ treatment of the yuan-ti is heavily lore-focused, with a section, useful to dungeon masters, on how to design a yuan-ti temple-city. From a tactical standpoint, the only additions are five new variants (!) and a brief subsection headed “Unusual Abilities.” In contrast, the nightmare speaker’s and pit master’s corresponding special abilities are single-use actions. The nightmare speaker’s Invoke Nightmare is handy for both battering and repelling an enemy, but because it requires concentration, it prevents the use of sustained spells, so it’s not that good in combat. The pit master’s Meershaulk’s Slumber, on the other hand, is a great burst-incapacitation ability that can potentially drop every non-elven spellcaster within view. Use this one in the first round of combat or don’t bother.

Snake Antipathy is a “go away” feature. Like the yuan-ti abomination’s ability to cast fear once per day, it makes sense only as a way of driving trespassers away from sacred or otherwise important places, or of stalling pursuit when the yuan-ti is losing the fight. Shapechanger, for the yuan-ti pureblood, comes with the same disadvantages as it has for the yuan-ti malison and yuan-ti abomination. Skip it.

Languages. Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character. The Player’s Handbook offers a list of languages to choose from. The DM is free to modify that list for a campaign. In The Scarlet Brotherhood, the yuan-ti civilizations described in in that book were all made worshippers of the Olman deity Tlaloc, a reptilian-headed god of rain. Yuan-Ti malisons appear as either humans with snake heads, or human upper bodies with snake lower bodies. In Yuan-Ti society, they are seen as the middle caste. Malisons with human upper bodies may have any hair color humans can have. Abominations considered humans repugnant and barely tolerated yuan-ti pureblood. Like all yuan-ti, abominations found the body odor of humans repulsive. [7] Ecology [ ]
