About this deal

At 3,200 dpi, the V850 does not perform significantly faster than the V600 but steps up to higher resolutions and this top-tier model pulls ahead, taking just 2 minutes 30 seconds to scan a 35mm frame at 12,800 dpi. However, there’s precious little to separate the V850 from the V600 when it comes to scanning quality. Both deliver excellent results that are almost indistinguishable, making the V850’s hefty price premium tough to justify unless you'll really benefit from its extra high-res scanning speed. Sold under the Kodak brand name, it converts film on 7in, 5in or 3in reels – and saves the output onto SD memory cards. There is a small 2.3in LCD so you can see the film before and during recording. People go through such lengths (aka money) to produce an aesthetic that is so much more appealing the the format that is innate to film. You can try to imitate the subtleties and randomness in film from a digital source, but put that in front of an audience, and it looks looks cheap and artificial.

very interesting project. I'm printing the 3D parts and buying the components. I have some question about the following components: Ummm, which parts would you be referring to? I modeled the entire set in Blender, thus getting everything done in proper scale and with all holes in place.Professional scanning service: Send your film to a professional film scanning service and receive a digital video within a few weeks. Digitizing film is a tedious process that becomes a lot more fun if you spend more of your time building a digitizer and less time actually working working with old film. [Heikki Hietala] has been at it for years and his Kotokino Mark IV film scanner is a masterpiece of simple machine building. Then use some fairly simple image recognition software to identify the transport holes in the film and crop to each of the individual frames using those holes as a reference? Noise, shitty optics, compression artefacts (an assumption on my part since I’m guessing you’ll be pulling JPEGs off these things) and as you mentioned bad colour.

Don’t expect meticulous scans. The quality is decent but nowhere near what you’d get out of a more advanced film scanner. You’re also on your own for cleaning up the negatives before scanning unless you want to spend a lot of time retouching out dust and other objects once the scan is done. There, Luke, you go too far! I contend that you cannot compare the two. If you projected them side by side, people would say “hey that first one reminds me what life was like when [I was a kid] sorry for my late reply ... I'm quite swamped with work, hence also the delay at the V2 of the project. Now put the axles through the mount plate and the roll mover (or roll spacer) and push the rolls on it. No need to adjust them yet.
