About this deal

Chief Investigator Professor Yan Yiannakou, Clinical Director of the NIHR Patient Recruitment Centre: Newcastle, said: “This study is certainly the UK’s first virtual trial for IBS patients, and one of the UK’s first virtual trials of an interventional therapy. It is a pathfinder for delivery of clinical trials and may help start a revolution in the way we run clinical trials post COVID-19.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common condition causing around 1 in 10 people to seek help from their GP at some point in their lives. It is a combination of abdominal discomfort or pain and altered bowel habits. IBS is classified as IBS with diarrhoea (IBS-D), IBS with constipation (IBS-C), or mixed IBS (IBS-M). What was the primary endpoint: The primary endpoint is the main result that is measured to see if the treatment has worked. Hi I have suffered with ibs D for a number of years and during that time have tried many different medicines to try and combat the diarrhoea , and have to say that loperamide did help somewhat but not every time. So I came across an article about enterosgel and thought I’d give it a go . Stop the treatment with Enterosgel if you do not have bowel movement for 1–2 days, increase intake of water and continue the treatment after the next bowel movement. The results from this study apply to people aged 16 and above with the diarrhoea form of irritable bowel syndrome. However, this summary only shows the results from this one study. Other studies may find different results. Patients should not change their treatment based on the results of this study without first talking to their doctor or healthcare professional. For children 15+ and adults: 15 g to 22.5 g (approximately 1 table spoon or 1–1,5 sachet) diluted in 200 ml of water 3 times a day. In the beginning of the treatment (on Day 1) you can double the first dose and then continue with a single dose after each bowel movement from 3 to 6 times a day. This product seems to be working for my post-infective IBS-C, despite the indications for its use in IBS-D. Pain and bloating improved as well as a return to normal bowel function. Had tried all allopathic treatments over the past seven years, including other alternative ones, to no avail, until now.Very grateful to the director of research for her very useful advice and support.

We used an official guideline to diagnose people with IBS-D, which may have stopped people with milder symptoms from being able to join the study. We used a water placebo as the control treatment to compare with Enterosgel mixed in water. These were not identical, but it was not possible to make a placebo the same as Enterosgel. We did not ask participants if they knew which treatment they had been taking during the double-blind phase. It may be that some knew which treatment they had taken (became unblinded) once they started the open-label phase when all patients took Enterosgel. We tried to limit this from happening by not allowing people to join the study that had used Enterosgel before.

Acute infectious diarrhoea is characterised by sudden onset diarrhoea, with or without vomiting. Most cases are due to an enteric virus, but some are caused by bacterial or protozoal infections. 2 The illness usually resolves without treatment within days and is often managed at home without seeking professional advice. However, it still poses a significant burden on health service resources and the economy with many patients and parents missing time from work and seeking advice from healthcare professionals in primary or secondary care. 1 3 4 Current National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance is fluid and nutritional management. 1 3 However, standard rehydration management does not reduce the duration of diarrhoea 5 and the challenge of treating diarrhoea itself remains. There is a need for treatments, which can decrease the duration of illness and reduce attendances to primary care or emergency departments. Enterosgel may affect the absorption of some medicines that are administered orally – use Enterosgel 2 hours before or after taking oral medication. If you are taking any medication, you may wish to consult with your doctor or pharmacist regarding taking Enterosgel.
