Ben Kingsley was born Krishna Bhanji on December 31, 1943 in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England. His father, Rahimtulla Harji Bhanji, was a Kenyan-born medical doctor, of Gujarati Indian descent, and his mother, Anna Lyna Mary (Goodman), was an English actress. Ben began to act in stage plays during the 1960s. He soon became a successful stage actor, and also began to have roles in films and television. His birth name was Krishna Bhanji, but he changed his name to "Ben Kingsley" soon after gaining fame as a stage actor, fearing that a foreign name could hamper his acting career. The film earned Kingsley an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. And even more amazing was that in 2004 the magazine Total Film named Sexy Beast the 15th greatest British film of all time... I would not go as far as saying that, but it had charm of its own. The film was shot in London and Spain in the summer of 1999. Ray Winstone travelled to Spain two weeks before filming commenced to get as deep a tan as he could in the time possible and to eat as much as he could to bulk up considerably. He called it "the best rehearsal time I've ever had in my life". [4] Winstone had originally been considered for the role of Don, along with Anthony Hopkins. [5]
This seems to come from the gangland era of Brinks-Mat rather than 2001: it's no hi-tech cyber-scam and no one has a laptop computer in this film. But Glazer carries it off by making it a virtual dream sequence: tunnelling in from a private health club swimming pool and flooding the strong room gives the whole thing a Dali-esque quality.
