About this deal

Stamatiou, Paul (13 December 2009). "Review: Sonos ZonePlayer S5 All-In-One Wireless Music System". Paul Stamatiou . Retrieved 4 November 2016. Like the ZonePlayer 100 and Connect:Amp (previously known as the ZP120) before it, the new Sonos Amp is designed to offer all of Sonos’s streaming smarts in a unit you can add any hi-fi speakers to. Network bridging: The 2-port switch (10/100Mbps, auto MDI/MDIX) allows Ethernet devices to connect through SonosNet™ The ‘phantom centre channel’ works well, with dialogue proving clearer and more direct than in a typical stereo system. A dedicated centre speaker is predictably better in this regard, but Sonos has done an admirable job of creating the impression of one without the extra hassle or expense. First some bad news for hi-res music fanatics. The highest sample rate the Sonos system will support is 44.1kHz at 16 bits. If you insist on having 96kHz or higher capabilities in your multi-room music server system, the Sonos will not satisfy your needs any better than the AppleTV or Logitech Squeezebox Duet. For hi-res you’re going to have to move up to a much higher-priced unit.

So if I want a wireless multi-room speaker system in my home, I must turn to Sonos?" Not so fast. There are other options to consider, some of which offer a different flavour of sound or a different set of features to challenge Sonos's dominance. The Sonos system just works, and with the iPhone controller app, it makes Apple's amazing convergence device all the more amazingly convergent. Would that my home were bigger, and I had more friends to party with more often (like in all those spy movies where the target is always throwing a huge bash just conveniently that very night -- that's the scale I'm thinking of!)The Sonos Connect brings effortless wireless media streaming to existing hi-fi owners, but it's not the first Sonos system we'd recommend. There are also ancillary products such as the Sonos Boost. Connecting this box directly to your router expands and strengthens the wi-fi for Sonos products. It broadcasts 360-degree signals through walls and ceilings – ideal if you're setting up a multi-room system in challenging wireless environments. Oh and there are in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, too.

The Sonos ZonePlayer 90 allows music lovers to play all the music they want, all over their house, on all of their favorite audio equipment — a home theater system, powered speakers, a premium table top radio such as a Bose Wave Radio, and more. It is the easiest way to integrate existing audio equipment into a multi-room music system.Setting the ZonePlayer S5 up is simplicity itself, whether you’re already a Sonos user or not. If you already have a Sonos install you just put the ZP-S5 into discoverable mode, and then search for a new zone using your Sonos controller, or PC client. A few seconds later the ZP-S5 will be added to your list of Zones and you’re ready to go. Sonos - your stuff is awesome and your end-of-life hardware strategy is very much on a par with industry standards. Keep up the great work. There are myriad streaming options should you value sound quality over the flexibility Sonos offers. You can stream music from your NAS device and other digital libraries using the Cambridge Audio MXN10, for instance, to get fantastic audio performance. And the more streamers (and speakers) you buy, the more rooms of music you can have.

Comparing the Sonos’ digital output with the AppleTV digital signal was an exercise in audiophile frustration. Their output levels were exactly the same, which made it easy to do blind A/B/X testing. No matter how long or how intensely I listened I couldn’t hear any discernible differences between them. I tried MP3, Apple Lossless, and even AIFF files, and in every case both units produced identical sonic signatures. Soundstage dimensions, low-level details, harmonic balances, and dynamic capabilities were utterly indistinguishable from one to the other. Product finish: Anodized precision machined extrusion aluminum case. Aluminum casing also facilitates passive cooling. Sonos has partnered with Sonance to create the Sonos Architectural by Sonance range of speakers, which includes an in-wall speaker, in-ceiling speaker and an outdoor speaker. These are not Sonos speakers in the usual sense, but passive speakers designed to complement Sonos products in terms of finish and sonic character. During my forays onto the Internet in search of technical and anecdotal information on the Sonos system I’ve come across plenty of heated exchanges between Logitech Squeezebox and Sonos users about which system is better. Having used both, I have my own take on this. The headphones are thought to have an over-ear design with oval ear cups. Though another patent showed a wireless earbud design, so Sonos could be readying more than one pair. Since I built my house seven years ago I’ve been using a Teac Reference 500 Series audio system in my master bedroom and bathroom suite. The system had five separate components tethered together so they could share the same dedicated universal remote. The system sounded decent and worked smoothly, but my wife was never very comfortable with it. After seven years the only way she ever used the Teac system was with its five-CD changer for playing the same five CDs over and over. I got pretty tired of hearing those discs.

You can read Sonos' statement here and also the response from existing Sonos customers, most if not all vow never to buy Sonos again.

Can’t update S2 to support Gen 1 Play 5s as they don’t have the internal storage or RAM to allow it to load. Realistically, this is an issue affecting all smart products, from speakers to TVs. If anything, the fact Sonos has supported older products for far longer than many other companies, and many people still love their older Sonos devices, has inadvertently served to make Sonos' future support issue a much bigger deal than it is for other companies. What Hi-Fi? said:What is Sonos? How does it work? And how can you get started? The Sonos ecosystem explained. I just wondered if there are any future plans to update the S2 controller to include the Play 5 (Gen 1). Sonos's mission statement is to offer 'all the music on Earth', so as well as allowing you to play music from digital libraries (such as from a NAS device or a laptop), the app also offers the widest choice of streaming service compatibility. Sonos's aim is to be platform agnostic, and it's the most comprehensive list we've seen in any multi-room product.
