Comparing the Sonos’ digital output with the AppleTV digital signal was an exercise in audiophile frustration. Their output levels were exactly the same, which made it easy to do blind A/B/X testing. No matter how long or how intensely I listened I couldn’t hear any discernible differences between them. I tried MP3, Apple Lossless, and even AIFF files, and in every case both units produced identical sonic signatures. Soundstage dimensions, low-level details, harmonic balances, and dynamic capabilities were utterly indistinguishable from one to the other. Can’t update S2 to support Gen 1 Play 5s as they don’t have the internal storage or RAM to allow it to load. Realistically, this is an issue affecting all smart products, from speakers to TVs. If anything, the fact Sonos has supported older products for far longer than many other companies, and many people still love their older Sonos devices, has inadvertently served to make Sonos' future support issue a much bigger deal than it is for other companies.
