Jill Barklem (1951-November 15, 2017) was a British writer and illustrator of children's books. Her most famous work is the Brambly Hedge series. Poor little Wilfred becomes worried because no one seems to know it is his birthday...but little does he know, the entire village has a grand surprise for him! From the moment I opened this book I knew that my daughters would love it, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much they loved it: Lydia and Sarah now answer to Shell and Primrose and Phoebe (the poor third daughter who ends up being Olaf to their Anna and Elsa) is Shrimp. They have taken these mice into their hearts and adopted them as their own—the best seal of approval they can give. The mice of Brambly Hedge made their first appearance in 1980 when the four seasonal stories were published. Ever since, readers have loved exploring the miniature world of the hedgerow and meeting the families that live there.

Brambly Hedge is my ideal world. The way the mice live is completely natural, which is how I think life ought to be. They appreciate and use everything that grows around them. Theirs is a loving and caring society, but the mice are not just series and worth. They have FUN! Life is a series of picnics and gatherings, parties and outings." The books, whose first titles were published in 1980, are written and illustrated by Barklem. The first four books follow the seasonal pattern of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Her later four books follow the mice' various adventures and activities. The book itself would be too heavy for a much younger child to hold but it makes good bed time reading and perfect for confident older readers too. I quite enjoyed having the 4 individual seasonal books when I was younger but this book makes good sense if you want to save space or take all the stories with you at once. The Complete Brambly Hedge: Celebrating forty years of Brambly Hedge with this gorgeous storybook treasurySummer Story "Poppy Eyebright, do you love Dusty Dogwood and will you love him and care for him for ever and ever?"Young Poppy and Dusty fall in love over the course of the summer and soon the whole village begins to prepare for a wedding! The Secret Staircase (1983) – Primrose and Wilfred go up to the attic on their own to practice reciting the Mid-Winter Poem for an important performance. It follows a little mouse village set in the Brambly Hedge and goes throughout the year, following the various inhabitants as they go on adventures. Oh, and Brambly Hedge.A few months ago, I asked folks in the Read-Aloud Revival forum for their favorite book recommendationsfrom past episodes of the podcast, and the response was amazing—like asking a room full of kindergartners their favorite color and receiving a response that includes every color known to man and a few not yet invented.
