About this deal

This is a story of grief, guilt and blame which weighs heavily on people and this is depicted really well and at times, very movingly. As you would expect from Jane Harper this is extremely well written and is an excellent portrait of a small community with suspicion hanging over it and the devastation that can cause. There are tantalising hints about the past and events in the present in this slow burner of a novel. In places I find the pace is a bit too slow in the first 50% but the pace increases in the second half as the mystery deepens and mistrust strengthens. This half makes for gripping reading as you really don’t know who to trust, who to believe and you cast your eye over everyone. I think the outcome is a good surprise and fits well with those tantalising hints! I love the atmosphere that the author creates using the weather to great effect and especially the past storm, she uses the ebb and flow of the cold ocean to symbolise the attitudes of the inhabitants of Evelyn Bay. This really resonates with me and it is as if you are actually present on the shore. I love the use of the dangerous caves which hide as much as the people do and are an excellent metaphor for submerged secrets. The character development is really good especially in Kieran’s family and you feel so much is weighing on his mother Verity's shoulders. Jane Harper's highly anticipated fourth novel The Survivors is out now in all English-speaking territories including the United States, United Kingdom and Australia. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a Gregg Hurwitz book. To be honest, The Survivor has been on my to-read list for awhile. I’m glad I finally got around to it. This author is a master at creating anti-heroes, and Nate Overby doesn’t disappoint. He’s an absolutely wonderful character. I couldn’t get enough of Nate. The characters were mainly believable and engaging, particularly Nate and his family. I did think that some of the plot involving Pavlo were a little far fetched in places but there was enough tension and twists and turns in the story to keep the reader’s interest. A recommended read.

Still, this seems the book where Herbert started blending his previous approach from The Rats and The Fog--alternate chapters of the protagonist's journey and ones introducing new characters only to kill them off--into an overall smoother narrative. The end still kind of paid off, even if I knew it was coming. As a kid I somehow hadn't noticed--or just forgot--the debt this owes to The Exorcist, and that motif seemed a bit gratuitous, as if the plot didn't really need it, although I guess it added a sort of sub plot or red herring of sorts. I should have known better - but I thought this would be a memoir, not this hybrid. As it is, I am left wondering why on earth this has gotten so much attention. Then again, if you are of voyeuristic nature and like to look at other people’s misery, then this may be something for you. Gregg Hurwitz is the critically acclaimed, New York Times and internationally bestselling author of 20 novels, including OUT OF THE DARK (2019). His novels have been shortlisted for numerous literary awards, graced top ten lists, and have been published in 30 languages. It’s during this time that Kieran and his wife Mia are making plans to return to their hometown to help his father, now suffering with dementia. He’s also about to come face to face with his past. In the vein of The Dinner and Atonement, an instant international sensation sold in over 30 countries, in which three brothers confront the shattering childhood event that changed the course of their lives.

Unfortunately, "The Survivor", despite having a great premise, is a straight-forward thriller that offers to the reader nothing. Not even good entertainment. so even though this wasnt the best reading experience due to editing issues, i still think the story itself is a really good one.

Nate’s heroic actions set off a series of events that no sane person could ever envision. Now he must keep it together long enough to save his estranged wife and daughter. To give away anything else about the plot will destroy the read for you. So I won’t. Just trust me this is a good one. I am in no way a “thriller” girl. I prefer sexy books, or supernatural books or flat out horrific books. Thrillers usually put me to sleep. Immediately all of the town has their own opinion on what happened, if a crime was committed and who the culprit could be.There is an online forum and it has people divulging secrets about everyone. Kieran’s parents are struggling in a town where fortunes are forged by the sea. Between them all is his absent brother, Finn. The plot is nothing to write home about as well- there's nothing here except for the basic premise, and the fact that none of the characters in this novel is fleshed out or given anything besides very basic motivations for what they're doing, doesn't help in the least. In fact, calling this novel a "thriller" is a stretch. James Herbert’s third novel, The Survivor blends plausible manmade horror with the supernatural, with the result of a fast-moving, intriguing and thoroughly entertaining read.Look, I didn't really like any of them, but they were an interesting bunch and different enough that it kept the story interesting. Plus having so many of them meant there were lots of guesses as to who was behind all the drama. Survivor is emotional and gut-wrenching and much more than just another suspenseful thriller. If it is ever made into a movie I won’t bitch and moan like I usually do if my husband wants to drag me to it. I would love to see this on the big screen.

Kieran and his girlfriend Mia return to their hometown to introduce their newborn daughter to his parents. 12 years earlier Kieran’s brother Finn and other local boy Toby were killed in a drowning accident, but we are unsure of the particulars - this is revealed over time. I like Hurwitz, to be honest. His "Orphan X" series is good (although the latest one, "Dark Horse" was disappointing), and he's a great storyteller who knows how to weave a great tale filled with likable characters and nonstop action. Het zijn losse hoofdstukken die je zelf aan elkaar moet rijgen om het verhaal over een disfunctioneel gezin te compleet krijgen omdat ze niet in tijdsvolgorde staan. Melancholiek. Mooi geschreven. What Jane Harper truly excels at in my opinion, is her vivid descriptions of the atmosphere and the land and making both characters in their own right, which is no easy feat. The mystery itself is interesting and compelling. It drives the overall narrative, and infuses it with the prevailing atmosphere that something isn't quite right. The subtle malice flows through the undercurrents of this story, sweeping me away with its quiet intensity. Not much is happening on the surface, but underneath, it relentlessly builds the story into its inevitable and surprising conclusion. A murder of young art student threatened the cocooned safety of coastal town by bringing out buried secrets, lies, guilt, injustice, wrong punishments, regrets of the past related with the big storm which took away three people’s lives and traumatized their families’ lives forever! A friend of mine swears by reading and listening to a book simultaneously. This is the first time I’ve done it. I found it a very enjoyable experience, allowing me to keep one story going. And this was a story I wanted to keep going. This is an atmospheric and weighty story about a man who survived a tragedy attempting to come to terms with his past. The pacing is slow, and it is much more of a character study than a mystery. While Kieran serves as the narrator, other characters are slowly developed, and all transform by the end.
