About this deal

Manufacturers like Shimano will produce various types of components at different levels. This gives cyclists options when it comes to buying a road bike gear or a bike. Unfortunately I can foresee a Phase 4 when the 105 shifters give up the ghost. Will I be able to replace them with new Tiagra shifters and be able to swap between the XT and 105 mechs as the mood takes me? Or is the 'revised cable pitch' a bit of built in obsolescence?

Am I correct in thinking a 105 11 speed shifter would work? obviously the 11th index would not be used but other than that should work fine? Lots of second hand 105 shifters out there but not many new Tiagra ones. While bikes with Shimano Tiagra are usually substantially cheaper than those equipped with 105, the margin between the cost of components is often a lot smaller As I understand the RD 3300 can only work up to 27(T) and not sure if it can work with 9 speed cassettes should I choose that. That all adds up to 2,584g, although cables will add another 200g or so. Conclusion: Is Tiagra worth the money? The 105 and Tiagra dual-pivot brakes are where things get interesting. The 105 brakes are actually heavier than the Tiagra brakes. That doesn’t mean you should save money here, as the 105 brakes offer a few advantages over the Tiagra brakes. How do I run my wheel? Do I force the cassette with the spacer? Is this some compatibility change that I don't know about? Tiagra is a really impressive groupset. To get this level of performance, finish and attention to detail on such an affordable groupset is hugely impressive. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. You won't be able to get any larger than 53 teeth with Shimano, unless you're prepared to go up to Dura-Ace. As you’d expect to compare like for like, the 105 chainset is lighter, much lighter. As we said the Tiagra version is also available in a triple, but the 105 chainset goes down to 160mm in length for those of us that are a bit shorter. Front derailleur The 105 hydraulic STI units for disc brakes are 11-speed, as you'd expect, while the Tiagra are 10-speed. The new 105 R7000 STI units are considerably streamlined compared to both their predecessors and the Tiagra versions. At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. The outer ring in both cases is aluminium/GFRP. Again, the design is intended to provide stiffness. Overall, a Shimano Tiagra groupset is quite a bit heavier than a 105 groupset, but almost 200g of the difference is in the chainset The figures for 11spd are 2.7mm x 1.4 = ~3.78mm pitch. The mech ratio is the same 1.4 but the shifter is pulling less cable, so the chain movement is less. Welcome to the latest edition of road.cc’s comparison of Shimano's popular Tiagra and 105 groupsets. We've taken an in-depth look at the pros and cons of the two groups and listed the best-priced source of components that we can find. confirm that. My daily came with Tiagra 4700, swapped the calipers to 105, rear derailleur to Ultegra and the crankset to Campy Comp Ultra Overtorque, bought for silly money in a sale. All works fab, saves about 380g in all.

This design isn't something we're used to seeing on the 105. It's only been available on Dura-Ace and Ultegra. That's the problem with Tiagra, Sora, and Claris is that you can't upgrade if you have Tiagra to say 105 without replacing the whole transmission system, so it's wiser just from that standpoint alone to go with 105. The differences are that the 105 front derailleur is suitable for 11-speed use and a large chainring of between 46 and 53 teeth while the Tiagra one (below) is 10-speed compatible and takes a large chainring of between 46 and 52 teeth. (If you want to use a chainring larger than 53-teeth, Shimano says you have to go all the way up to a top level Dura-Ace front derailleur). You can also get a Tiagra front derailleur that’s suitable for use with a triple chainset. When it comes to rear derailleurs, this is where the 105 groupset differs from the Tiagra. The 105 R7000 is very different from the previous 105 models. It stems from the Ultegra R8000 design from the previous year. Is there a handy table anywhere showing the (somewhat subjective) relationship between the different groupsets? e.g. does Campagnolo Veloce still roughly compare to Shimano-105?an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product Tiagra has cables that are routed underneath the handlebar tape like the higher level Shimano groupsets, a feature that was a long time coming to the budget groupset. tiagra is different to all the other Shimano road 10 speed. It does indeed use the same pull ‘ratio’ as 11 speed, but the actual amount of cable it pulls is different to both traditional Shimano 10 speed road and Shimano 11 speed road.

Aside from the chainset, the new shifters are the most visible change from the previous Tiagra groupsets. The gear indicator windows have been lost and the size and shape are much like 105. If you need to make adjustments, on both levers this can be done using a screw-operated system. This is especially useful for those with a shorter reach or smaller hands are you are then able to move the levers to be closer to you. If you're buying a new road bike with the latest Tiagra, there's no doubt about it, you're getting a better bike for your money. VerdictIt's not as simple as upgrading your Tiagra groupset components one at a time. You can't make the 10 and 11-speed parts work together. If you go for 105, on the other hand, you could swap to Ultegra or Dura-Ace gradually as each component wears out. That might be attractive, but only if you’re realistically likely to do this. Was helping a mate upgrade his gearing on his Tiagra equipped bike. Pointed him to the cassette and longer cage mech he needed. I installed the parts for him and for the life of me I couldn’t get the indexing dialled in. I’ve done a bit of digging and it seems in its latest iteration Shimano have changed the pull ratio to be the same as that of the 11 speed components. So new shifter is needed. The fact that the 105 groupset is 11-speed is what sets it apart from Shimano Tiagra, that being only 10-speed.
