About this deal

The smart charger is not so smart in dealing with a battery whose voltage has fallen below about 8 volts. Registered office: Media House, Peterborough Business Park, Lynch Wood, Peterborough PE2 6EA and H Bauer Publishing, Company number: LP003328; KFZ-BATTERIELADEGERÄT ULGD 10 A1 VEHICLE BATTERY CHARGER ULGD 10 A1 CHARGEUR DE BATTERIE POUR VOITURE ULGD 10 A1 Charger is my existing charger bought for charging 12v batteries it is a smart one recommended several times in these forums for leisure batteries from Lidl/Aldi. It is a Ultimate Speed ULGD 3. 8 A1 Output at 12V 0. 8/3. 8A Getting you on your way after your car has suffered a flat battery remains at the heart of the test, so we timed how long each unit took to reach an 80 per cent charge – at which point a vehicle should be able to start – on our identical 80Ah test batteries.

A modern Aldi/Lidl smart charger, with 3. 6-4. 0 Ah rating should be capable of recharging from absolutely flat to 90+% fully charged in around 24 hours but may take another 24 hours of float charging to show 4 LEDS - at 12. 3v the OP's battery should have got to 90+% in around 15 hours. Whatever the problem was, the CTEK has worked like a dream. It's pretty much identical to the LIDL charger except for the colour and design.Another solid performance from the IBC7, which does a lot of things well. Looking like an overgrown CTEK MXS, it has long leads and a reconditioning mode, plus can provide a 13.6V supply to maintain power when the battery is removed. As we saw last time, it was still some way off its 7A rating in the charge test and took 16 hours to hit 80 per cent. It failed the EMC test by some margin again, plus it had only IP54 moisture protection compared with many rivals’ IP65. After leaving the charger attached for over 2 days, it still claimed to be charging and when the charger was removed, the above readings were the same. A huge price jump from the NOCO, the CTEK CS FREE (read our full review) is a big step up in terms of abilities, offering four major functions in this one portable unit. First and foremost, it serves as a battery booster capable of charging a dead battery safely and effectively, all without needing an external power source. Very happy with the CTEK and even though it cost more, it has a 5 year guarantee. It looks similar to the LIDL one but actually works, which is nice. Also says you can connect it while the battery is connected to the car. The LIDL manual says you have to disconnect the car terminals which can be problematic if you don't know your radio code.

Happy to be corrected, but doesn't the OP have a Mercedes Vito with some kind of wheelchair lift, presumably electric. If that's being used at the start and finish of short journeys, could that be causing problems? There is one more useful feature on this charger. It claims to revive empty, discharged and overcharged batteries. This is by 'pulse charging'. The charger automatically recognises the state of the battery it's connected to and pulse charges if required. This continues until the battery reaches a stage where conventional charging takes over. Most car batteries are only good for 3 years from new, and in stop/start cars many need to be replaced at 5 years regardless of performance. There’s a distinct old-school feel to this hefty, metal-cased RAC charger with its analogue gauge. The instructions feel the same, while plugging it in results in a hot electronics smell and a vibration. Despite 12A on the box, the instructions and gauge have max output at 8A – and we saw 4A as it took 16 hours to hit 80 per cent. At least it had no trouble in the EMC tests. There are better, more modern solutions. AGM batteries are often specified on cars with stop/start - the Aldi/Lidl and CTEK chargers handle AGM by using the "cold" 14. 7v setting.use them fairly often (caravan leasure battery maintenance mainly) along with dads car if its not come out the garage for a week to keep it healthy...

The Aldi one is around 14. 4 volts, it will put some power in but I never did find a fully charged indicator with my car even after a day charging. I'm now used to seeing a voltage around what you report, regularly on my in car voltmeter. I'm told that anything over 12 volts should be enough to turn and start the car, which appears to be true.Club Motorhome. All Rights Reserved. Registered No. 08243365 The CTEK smart chargers always had conditioning modes - the Aldi/Lidl smart chargers also have that mode. Maybe that's just mine, but watch out like.Mines the same. The instructions state there is a low voltage cut out so it won't charge a completely flat battery as the battery could possibly be damaged. CarGurus UK Limited, c/o Legalinx Limited, 3rd Floor, 207 Regent St, London W1B 3HH, United Kingdom The optimum charging cauurent for a battery is around 10% of it's capacity which should therefore get it up to around 80% charge in about 8-10 hours from flat. The last 20% takes a lot longer, possibly another 8-10 hours mainly because the charging current tails off as the charger is voltage limited and frequently switches down to around 13. 8 volts when the charging current drops below a certain level. Some chargers will hold the higher 14. 4 volts for a timed period after the threshold to try and get the last bit in a bit faster - ideally you need to monitor both voltage & current to establish what is going on.

Halfords is where people I know go but I think they out to sell batteries. Wasn't impressed by them with last car they didn't know how to test a battery they couldn't see Negative terminal. I had to show them how! It claims to be 'intelligent microprocessor controlled' and has a 'diagnostics programme and controlled charging process'. Mines the same. The instructions state there is a low voltage cut out so it won't charge a completely flat battery as the battery could possibly be damaged. The charger will only start when the charging process has been selected. There are 4 Modes, the first is for 6v batteries, Mode 2 is for small 12v wet batteries, Mode 3 is for larger 12v wet batteries and Mode 4 is for AGMs. Whichever is selected will result in a red light to confirm the selection in the top row of lights and a red light in the lower row to show that charging is taking place. The Ultimate Speed ULGD 3.8 A1 charger is a device designed to charge batteries in an efficient and effective way. The charger has an output current of up to 3.8 amps and is compatible with various types of lead-acid batteries. The device is equipped with a microprocessor-controlled charging cycle, which automatically adjusts the charging current and voltage to the battery's requirements. So, with this charger there is at least an opportunity to charge my leisure batteries properly and fully whenever convenient. OK, so I admit to impulse buying occasionally when wandering around the 'specials' in Lidl and Aldi. This multi-stage battery charger was the result of one such browse. Includes 12V adaptor, jump starter cable and 3 way USB charging cable for mobile phones and tablets with micro USB / mini USB / or USB-C connection When we changed to our Lunar in 2013, it's power supply can't be switched off, so an Aldi smart charger is used occasionally during the winter months, taking the battery indoors - the fact that it goes into conditioning mode automatically indicates that 1) it has one and 2) caravan onboard power supplies DO allow sulphation to occur, thus shortening battery lives. Specifically designed to cater for cars with start/stop systems, the CTEK CT5 helps to maintain your battery if your car has to sit for a little while.
