About this deal

Keith Bontrager on chamois creme from about a decade ago (still worth a read): http://autobus.cyclingnews.com/riders/2006/diaries/keith/?id=keith0606

The simple answer is that if the cycling shorts are new enough that you are still wearing them today, the chamois is probably synthetic. If it looks anything like the one pictured to the right, it’s synthetic. Then why should I use chamois butter? Made in Dorset, Bikemonger’s ‘Happy Bottom Bum Butter’ is vegan-friendly, made from 100 per cent natural ingredients and has a more ‘medicinal’ smell thanks to its use of clove oil. Premax Chamois Cream for Women is similar to the men's version in its price and fancy looks but formulated with ingredients for women's skin to balance pH and aid moisture while smelling good. It's long-lasting, feels amazing and delivers a very pleasant experience. Chamois creams can vary quite a lot in their consistency. This one has a pretty firm, waxy feel and the ingredients list is mostly a bunch of different waxes and emulsifiers. It also contains calendula extract (a type of marigold) that has natural anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties.Chamois Butt’r Coconut is a whole new level for me. This cream reduces chafing, not just the first hour (as the creams I’ve used), but I can feel its effects even after 3 hours. It feels cooling on the skin, yet not greasy or overly wet, with a texture like wet clay. Then again, there's clay in it, along with beeswax and cocoa butter. The big revelation wasn’t just that Chamois Butt’r is suitable for more places than the rear, but also that it wasn’t only for exercise-induced skin flare-ups. I have city girl problems too! General summer grooming issues! Random tantrums of the epidermis. I'd suggest using something like Savlon if required on those intimate areas, and chamois cream for the rest?

We've recommended the 'standard' formula, which doesn't come with any promises of cooling. The brand does offer a 'Euro Style' formula, which adds in Witch Hazel and Menthol, thus giving that freshening effect which is so 'marmite' among riders. Bend36 is named after the 36 hairpins on the Passo dello Stelvio (when you're climbing from Bormio; there are 48 on the other side) and it's a brand that's been developed in part by Alberto Contador and Ivan Basso. Between them they should know a thing or two about staying comfortable in the saddle. Menthol produces a bizarre cold sensation in your nether regions once applied. But nonetheless, it can be a great added ingredient for chamois cream thanks to its numbing properties, therefore helping to relieve any soreness and pain that you may be experiencing in the saddle. Often the ingredients list is far longer than that, so I like to look for products that are paraben-free, gluten-free, and vegan, and contain no artificial fragrances. Couldn’t it damage my expensive shorts?Endurance training on a road bike often exceeds 3 hours. It is easy to experience discomfort during long rides. And chamois creams help with that. Here are some of the most common chamois mistakes cyclists make—and what experts say you should be doing instead. Bikemonger's Happy Bottom Bum Butter is a distinctly different unguent for down below, more a wax than a cream, but it nevertheless lubes your bits really well and lasts a long time.
