This series was a blast and I am looking forward to owning these 2 books in physical form so I can have them on my shelf to re-read. ❤️ Cuando ya se me habían secado las lágrimas, volvieron a correr con el epílogo de Hubbard y Tang Lan QAQ i'm sorry if i want big, dramatic, soul-crushing emotional moments in my big, dramatic, world-ending novel - but little mushroom simply refused to give that to me. i can appreciate quiet subtlety and restrained emotions but not when the world is coming to an end. like, humankind is on the brink of extinction and you're NOT gonna be screaming, crying, throwing up for the guy you love??? this is about lu feng of course but even in general, the story felt so muted and stifled when it came to emotional moments and i don't understand why. However, in a sci-fi apocalypse setting, there’s usually a “man vs. nature-gone-wrong” element that makes such a scenario more…nuanced, I guess? That is, if you’ve actually got zombies or people turning into flesh-eating bugs, then the “shoot as soon as you know they’re infected” approach makes more sense.

The highlight of this volume was the attention to the emotional development of An Zhe, who finally comes to terms with the fact that he isn't just a mushroom with a single-minded focus, but has formed attachments and has human-like wishes of his own, and can also be self-sacrificing. Though not exclusively, a lot of this development is centered on An Zhe's relationship with Lu Feng, and his place in the uncomparably lonely world of the Arbiter. There were two chapters in particular I have in mind that did this beautifully and memorably. I'm certain these will incentivize a re-read much sooner than I would originally intend. It was hard to describe his mood at this moment but he felt like his heart was being held tightly by one hand. Intense pain drowned him and warm liquid poured out of his eyes. He knew that he was crying, knew that it was tears—something that only humans could possess. However, he felt it for the first time—the feeling that his heart was being torn into pieces. I love that Lily (who is a 6 year old and is not allowed to go outside) has all the gossip, like the minute lu feng left the room she’s giving all the details on him to an zhe I highly recommend this book if you love Dystopia genre, M/M angsty cute romance with grumpy sunshine trope, MONSTERS (a lot of Monsters) and fast plot!
