About this deal

Shaunette, Morgan (February 18, 2022). "She-Ra Writer Shares Epic Book of Boba Fett-Inspired Fan Comic". CBR. Archived from the original on February 19, 2022 . Retrieved February 18, 2022. Was hoping to like this a lot more. How on earth does a comic manage to have sooo much dialogue? It felt like they really just wanted to write fanfic, but needed to squish it into a comic book format. The large amount of text squished into the small speech bubbles became tedious to read. The illustrations weren't bad, however they didn't resemble either Lumberjanes or Gotham Academy AT ALL, so between that and the huge character roster, it was sometimes hard to tell everyone apart. Thinking Out Loud: Jen does this when worrying over Rosie's fate. When she realizes that the Lumberjanes overheard her, she lampshades it: "When will I learn to inner monologue?!" Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy by Chynna Clugston Flores - Goodreads

Well-Intentioned Extremist: Louise's parents thought they were helping Louise by causing her to relive her birthday over and over again. April decides that it's the most excessive helicopter parenting she's heard of. Dominguez, Noah (October 6, 2020). "Lumberjanes Series, Feature Special Land at HBO Max". CBR. Archived from the original on October 8, 2020 . Retrieved October 8, 2020. Anyway, I enjoyed this. Olive is feeling glum and depressed in life. At first you have no real idea why, but what is fun about this book is that little bits and pieces get explained as you read it. It's exciting. Also, I found the characters to be interesting and not "too weird." A lot of times superhero comics are just... incomprehensible. Not the case here.

L: Well, I suppose I gotta break the bad news. This is better than Lumberjanes but not nearly as good as Gotham Academy. A number of students are convinced a ghost is haunting the grounds and they decide to investigate: Scooby-Doo! Our protagonist is Olive, a cute girl who broke up with a cute boy over the summer and is shyly courting another cute boy: Dawson’s Creek! And let’s crowbar in an extremely kid-friendly Batman subplot too! So what’s the story of Gotham Academy? Er… stuff happens? Air-Vent Passageway: The Detective Club uses one to get into MacPherson's office without being spotted. Big Damn Heroes: During the climax, Mal comes to Molly's rescue when a Chaperone is about to get her. Boom!’s Lumberjanes is in currently in development as a movie at 20th Century Fox, with Kira Goldberg and Ryan Jones overseeing the project for the studio alongside BOOM!’s Ross Richie and Stephen Christy. DC’s Gotham Academy, meanwhile, is wrapping up its current run ahead of a relaunch as part of the company’s Rebirth program this fall. The second collection of the series, Gotham Academy: Calamity, will be released in comic stores on March 16.

The humour is on point pretty much all the time, and the character dialogue is great. The problems become the fact that the casts are just too large to really get time to shine. Not only do you have all of the Lumberjanes + Jen + Rosie, there's also all of the Gotham Academy kids + Professor MacPherson, which is already taking us into double digits, before we even get to the 'villains' of the piece. There are a lot of moving parts, and it really gets messy as the story goes on because some people just don't have much to contribute to the plot. There's a lot of effort made to include everyone, but sometimes a narrower focus would have been more appropriate. Go Seduce My Archnemesis: A heroic version; the entire escape plan depends on Kyle pretending to be Louise's crush. The Bad: A lot of characters to juggle to the point where it was difficult for anyone to stand out. Plus, the story really dragged in the middle. Probably could have shortened this by 2 issues. It doesn’t help that she keeps talking about the past summer where something happened that changed her life and we never find out what. But that about sums up her character: the reader is kept at arm’s length the whole time so it’s that much harder to give a damn about what happens to her.

This series provides examples of:

Anachronism Stew: The lodge is trapped in 1986, which means we get to see a lot of outdated clothes and ideas.

Boom! Box released a series of original graphic novels, written by Lilah Sturges and drawn by polterink:Greater-Scope Villain: Louise's parents, who cast a spell on her and the entire lodge so that she could be happy. Perhaps one of the reasons I enjoyed this was because of all the tiny love. Teens (aged 15-ish?) who are having their little crushes and doing cute flirting with each other and maybe falling in love for the first time. But, you know... with secret cults and possible ghosts and secret passageways and stuff. <3 Time is freezing at camp, and it’s up to Roanoke Cabin to stop the nefarious and mysterious forces behind it. Clothing Damage: Not the sexy sort, but the Gothamites' clothes are dinged up enough that the Lumberjanes decide to get them new outfits.
