Not only will it point you to the perfect starting point, but also explains the various different editions, the sequels and spin-offs, and heaps more. Table of contents Created by a young Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg, The Sandman is one of the most revered comics of all time. It’s a series that’s very near and dear to many readers’ hearts due to its creativity, flesh out characters, and the risks it took. Critics loved it too, with it winning dozens of awards. In the wake of Crisis on Infinite Earths, DC could have easily reinvented either Dodds or Sanford for their new clean slate of continuity. Instead, they handed the character to a barely-known British journalist: Neil Gaiman.

This Vertigo series launched by Matt Wagner in 1993 is generally set prior to Wesley Dodds joining the Justice Society of America, which was formed in All-Star Comics (1940) #3. So, what’s this horror/ fantasy series about? While it follows Morpheus, his family of omnipotent beings known as The Endless, and the people he encounters, it’s also about much more. Gaiman and his collaborators used the series to explore stories as a concept. That central theme is examined through the prism of mythology, folklore, history, and classic literature to create a kaleidoscope of tales, looking at concept from a variety of angles. In this second SANDMAN OMNIBUS, Delirium prevails upon the Sandman to help her find their errant brother, Destruction. But their quest will lead to a painful reunion between Morpheus and his son, Orpheus. Then, the Sandman and others are trapped in a mysterious inn while a tempest rages—and all they can do to while away the time is tell the stories of their lives. And when a young woman's baby is stolen, she turns to The Kindly Ones for vengeance, only to set off a series of events that will lead the Sandman to his ultimate fate, and the baby to find a destiny no one could have foretold. Grant Morrison's long run with Batman was widely praised, and the best-selling writer's celebrated collection of works once again created one of the best DC omnibuses for fans to sink their teeth into.

The Dreaming ran for five years, though it was never a hit on the magnitude Sandman itself. Yet, its endurance allowed for the launch of several mini-series – some under the title “The Sandman Presents.” One of those mini-series starred Gaiman’s version of Lucifer as penned by Mike Carey, which spun into its own franchise with a 75-issue series in 2000 and a later 2016 revival ( visit the guide). This is not a surprise, as Gaiman is heavily involved in its development and is an executive producer on the show. It also helps that fellow producers David Goyer and Allan Heinberg are on board with adapting the comic as closely as possible.
