About this deal

Joy, her daughter Kate, and her 16-year-old granddaughter Sabine are quite human (sometimes frustratingly so) as they try to understand themselves and their relationships with one another. This is not a plot-driven novel; it is one of character in which there are some lovely and strongly emotional scenes, and the author’s writing about horses and the Irish countryside is absolutely beautiful. I'm happy when two of my favorite characters from the novel that I'm reading will end up with each other and they will soon be engaged and get married but what happens after that? But then marriage isn't always full of roses and soft whispers of love or some royalty kind of fairy tale we often dream. Marriage has its own dark side, too, and I'm not sure if I'm prepared to embrace it just yet.

Sheltering Rain" is not a Romance, not in my estimation, anyway, but, as it turns out, it is a LOVE STORY, a love story of the truest sort. It is a love story of a family, of mothers and daughters, of failed love and love that lasted the test of time. Its a story to teach us about the illusion of "perfect" that we believe we see in others, and a story about finding perfection amongst the broken reality of family life. In 1980, Joy’s young daughter Kate mysteriously flees the family home. Fifteen years later, Kate’s own daughter Sabine leaves London in search of grandparents she has never known. When the family is finally reunited, hidden tensions come to the surface, uncovering a dark secret which has been deeply buried for years . . . On the night of the 1953 Coronation ceremony, the expatriate community in Hong Kong has gathered for a celebration party, and while they strain their ears to hear the proceedings on a faulty wireless, Joy, a rebellious 21 year-old, falls in love at first sight. She is engaged within twenty-four hours, but then will not see her fiancé again for a year... The novel consists of eight quite distinct chapters, as the work resembles a loosely connected story-collection.A real love that survived the slings and arrows of fate that soared, like some kind of 1950's Romeo and Juliet, above the petty and mundane. The kind of love you read about in books, that inspired songs, that lifted you like a bird yet stood solid, like a monolith, vast, all-encompassing, enduring. . . Gigi is the offspring of The Deal’s main couple, Garrett and Hannah. Garrett and Hannah’s story came out in 2015,…

The only reason I carried on reading was because I'd taken the book on holiday and had nothing else to do that day! However the novel focuses on Sabine, Joy's sulky grand-daughter, whose has been exiled to Ireland by her self-centered mother. You should feel sympathy for Sabine, but I couldn't. La narrazione viaggia su due piani temporali diversi, aspetto che mi piace tanto: quello del presente, sdoppiato tra l’Irlanda e Londra, e quello del passato dei due nonni da giovani, dal giorno in cui si sono conosciuti. The focus of the story then shifts to rural Ireland in the late 1990s. Joy is now a grandmother and Sabine, the child of her estranged daughter, has come to stay. Sabine’s mother Kate is coming out of yet another bad relationship and has essentially dumped Sabine at Joy’s farm while she tries to get her life together. Now let’s set that aside. I couldn’t understand why make Sabine go too far with Thom who shares history with her mother. I get that she resented the prospect of a relationship between him and her mom, and a 16 year-old who might have daddy issues is inevitable to crush on older men that are old enough to father her, but that seduction scene? It was awkward, disgusting, and so unnecessary. Also.. whatever happened with Kate’s half brother? You can't just unveil a secret like that and leave us hanging not knowing about it further. It was like a hole in the story. Moyes' novel Foreign Fruit won the Romantic Novelists' Association (RNA) Romantic Novel of the Year in 2004. This novel started with promise, I wanted to know what happened with Joy's and Edward's marriage. It seemed very romantic that they were engaged after meeting just once.
