Courts Brothers to stay in jail after appeal of 'cynical and calculated' rape of girl (14) they got ‘comatose drunk’ fails 11:58 I stumbled upon the work of Steve Cavanagh early this year and have not been able to get enough. While Eddie Flynn is a wonderful protagonist, I enjoyed this standalone that permitted me to see a new and exciting side to this thrill writer. Cavanagh creates a wonderful story with a handful of basic characters, turning a simple reveal into a masterful game of cat and mouse. With a story in which the reader knows all and watches things play out, Cavanagh develops his narrative and takes it in many needed tangents before returning things for the final reveal. Cavanagh uses his strong characters and dialogue to pull the reader in, mixing short and longer chapters to create sustained interest. Once caught in the trap, all the reader can do is ‘read a little more’ to get their fix. I’m now a firm believer that Steve Cavanagh is one of those versatile authors who can turn any plot into a masterful novel. If only I did not have to wait so long for more!

Among all of the murder and mayhem there is a serious question raised in Twisted. And that is: how much do you need to know about crime or personally experience to write a good crime novel? Could it be possible that the most atmospheric and realistic books about serial killers can only be written by serial killers? Or does it take some other form of slightly off kilter personality?

The other thing great twists have in common is that you don’t see them coming. You’re so wrapped up in the story that they hit you without warning. Because ‘Twisted’ sells itself on its twists I found myself constantly looking for them, so that when they did come, they weren’t that unexpected. Often, I’d spent so much time thinking about them that I’d already figured out what they were going to be. All you need is to prove something, whether it’s true or not. In the author’s own words, “whoever tells the best story usually wins.” Irish News Hoping to see Bruce Springsteen? A fantastic standalone thriller. Punchy, ridiculously gripping, fast-paced, clever. Beautifully-plotted and incredibly fun to read. He's done it again. SUPERB. * Will Dean * In his latest book, Thirteen, Steve Cavanagh touches on the lives of celebrities in Hollywood: the movie stars, fixers, gossip, politics, and the glamorous world overall. The main enemy in the book is Joshua Kane who is much more evil and ruthless than even Hannibal Lector, the character of the author’s first read as a teen. I don’t know what else to tell you about the plot so I’m not even going to try. I love a twisty, convoluted thriller but this may have had one or two twists too many. Most of the time I didn’t have a clue what was going on or which way was up! Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed reading this but I do think it was too much.

Summary

After moving to the field of civil rights, in 2010 he took on a racial abuse case representing a factory worker. This case resulted in a landmark damages ruling, and it made Steve Cavanagh quite famous all over again. When Sheriff Abraham Dole, and his Deputy of very few words, Melissa Bloch, are called in to a break in at the Coopers home, they can feel something is off, particularly when nothing is taken. This turns out to be the beginning of an investigation for them that is to test them to their limits as it spirals in completely unexpected directions, and begins to take in a long ago case that involved the murder of a woman who was never identified in Port Lonely, a case Dole has never forgotten. This is a story of a rising body count in murders, of characters that are nothing as they appear, unreliable memories, and two authors in the process of writing their latest books, one a murderous predator, the other trying merely to survive. The book is aptly named “Twisted” because just when you think you have a grasp on what is going on and you believe you know who J.T. Lebeau is, the rug is pulled from underneath you and you are spun around in circles. I lost count of how many times I thought I had worked it out and could see where the end was going only to find out that everything had changed and was upside down. Twisted resembles a zingy Elmore Leonard noir caper, but with a bonus metafictional strand. * Sunday Times * No one has ever met the elusive and successful writer but almost everyone has read his gruesome and twisted novels.
