About this deal

Calling the Everbilt template a cabinet hinge jig is a bit of a stretch, but as a low-cost way to mark out cabinet hinge positions, it works fine. It also includes the necessary Forstner drill bit, though not the 1/16-inch bit for hinge retaining screws. The Milescraft jig will fit 1⅜- and 1¾-inch doors as well as hinges from 2½ to 4½ inches, in ½-inch increments. With the main frame and templates, there are nine pieces in the kit. While this can seem confusing at first, each template is marked with the appropriate size or function. The mounting plate itself should be positioned so that the vertical line is dead centre to the fixing holes while the horizontal line should be dead centre to the mounting plate itself. As mentioned there are a few other sizes of concealed hinge including 40mm, but these tend to be for more heavy weight specialist applications. How Many Concealed Hinges Should you use on Each Door? Hope that’s useful, I’m going to make a template and use these new style ultrusta cabinet hinges tomorrow, on a ‘hole in the wall’ pair of doors project. I’ll add some notes here if I learn anything new to watch out for. UPDATE

Hinge and Mounting Plate Jig - Cup Sizes 26/35mm

The amount of adjustability provided by door hinge jigs depends very much on the type. Very basic cabinet hinge jigs are simply used to mark hole positions, and any adjustment is manual. More advanced models have rotating cams that give different spacings from the edge of the door. These jigs are usually one size to suit the hinge being used—either 35 millimeters (mm) or 26mm—though some can accommodate both. The next task is to measure and mark the positions using a pencil of each mounting plate on the inside of the cupboard or unit you are fixing your door to. It is easy to be critical, but for a one-off job, or for someone who has a pillar drill to set depth, the Everbilt does the job at a fraction of the price of most competitors. Use the tables below to work out how many hinges you will need to install to the cabinet door you are fitting to ensure it opens and closes correctly and more importantly doesn’t sag. There are several different ways that a cabinet door can be fitted to a unit and although this doesn’t necessarily make any difference to the type of concealed hinge you use it does make a difference to the way it is positioned and mounted on the inside of the cabinet. Types of Cabinet DoorsThere are quite a few different designs and styles of concealed cabinet hinge around today. Some feature different types of hinge arrangement and screw fixings, some have much bulkier and heavier to cope with over-sized and heavy doors, some have soft-closing mechanism’s built into them, some open much wider (170° as opposed to 93° or 110°), some are for integrated appliances and many other variations. Durability is assured by the cast-aluminum construction. For transportation, the jig is dismantled into two pieces, and it comes with a carrying case. A guide bush for the router cutter is included, though the cutter itself is not—rather disappointing given the Trend door hinge jig’s high price. Aside form the above the only differences that you need to be aware of is the size of the cup. The most common size of cup used on pretty much all kitchen cabinets is 35mm. The 35mm refers to the diameter of the cup itself when measured. In addition to the 35mm offset cams, a pair of 26mm cams is also provided. These allow the BI-DTool jig to be used for smaller hinges, though the required cutter is not included. Unlike the Kreg, there is no scale on the edge to help with alignment. Additional clamps are required to hold the jig in position, but that’s typical of this kind of jig. A 1/16-inch drill is provided for retaining screw holes, though care is needed as this can easily cut into the plastic guides on the jig, thus reducing their accuracy.

Once positioned accurately mark screw holes, drill a pilot hole and screw it in place. Repeat for any remaining hinges. Fit Cabinet Door to Unit or Framework Once positioned accurately drill the recess down to a depth of 11-12mm. Stop periodically and test fit the hinge cup to make sure all is well. To test that your mark is accurate and in the correct place position the hinge so that the edge of the mounting plate is flush with line drawn in the above step. You should have around 4-5mm between the cup and edge of the cabinet door. s If the cup recess is set at the standard 22mm or so in from the edge of the door the mounting plate will need to be raised around 8mm off of the inner side of the unit. A thin 8mm piece of door stop is ideal for this.

Different Types of Concealed Hinge and how They are Measured

Hinge cup: The hinge cup is the part of a concealed hing that is fixed to the cabinet door. A 10-12mm recess is cut into the rear of the door for the cup to sit in If you are simply replacing one concealed hinge with a new one then it’s always best to swap like-for-like.

Next, measure in and mark with a pencil two points above and below the mark made in the above step and join them together then, using a carpenters square, extend the horizontal mark made above until it hits the vertical line. As you should now know what type of door you have and what type of concealed hinge to use it’s now time to get them fitted. Measure and Mark Hinge Cup Positions on Cabinet Door The jig can flex if too much pressure is applied when routing, so care is needed. Unfortunately, the included router bit is not very good and soon loses sharpness. Those with numerous doors to hang may wish to invest in a better cutter. There are a number of cabinet hinge jigs available that mimic the high-quality Kreg model described above. The BI-DTool has a few features that set it apart from many low-cost rivals. It is made from engineered plastic—a synthetic resin noted for increased durability. Cams provide the usual offsets at 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm, and there’s a depth stop so the jig can be used for framed and frameless doors. Even skilled carpenters usually turn to a door hinge jig to ensure the fast, accurate positioning of door hardware. This tool helps obtain the precise measurements required for the task of installing doors. Most are simple enough to be used by even relatively inexperienced DIYers, and most are very affordable—especially when compared to the cost of ruining a door.

This guide takes a close look at both types of door hinge jigs: those for full-size doors and those for cabinet doors. The two are actually quite different, so we’ll explain their technical aspects before offering suggestions for what we believe are the best door hinge jigs currently available. Kreg, one of the world’s leading jig makers, does not disappoint with this high-quality precision cabinet door hinge jig. It is made from tough glass-filled nylon and designed to cut holes for standard 35mm cabinet hinges (often called Euro hinges). Buying a door jig is the easy option, but with care, it is possible to make your own. In fact, for cabinet doors, a jig isn’t strictly necessary. If you can measure and mark accurately, hold the drill vertically, and judge the depth of a hole, then a Forstner bit of the appropriate diameter to match the hinge is all that is required. Owners of pillar drills will find the task easier, but a portable drill and a steady hand can get the job done. Cabinet door hinge jigs are simply held to the inside of the door using any convenient woodworking clamps. Ratcheting types are convenient because they are easy to use one-handed. Two clamps should be employed, one either side of the cutter guide, to ensure that the jig can’t twist.

If you do need to make any position adjustments to you hinge see our project here that covers how to adjust concealed hinges and kitchen cupboard doors for full details. Firstly, measure and mark the same distance down from the top of the inside of your cabinet that you previously marked on the door for the top hinge, normally this is around 85-100mm. Fitting a concealed cabinet hinge is a slightly different process to fitting a standard hinge in that it needs to fitted slightly offset from the edge of the door and front edge of the cabinet carcass, so accurate measuring and marking is a must if the cabinet door is to fit correctly. The other commonly used size of concealed hinge is 26mm. These hinges are a fair bit smaller than the 35mm hinges so are commonly used on the smaller more light weight cupboards and units normally found in bathrooms.
