About this deal

Additionally, before starting any work it is always a very good idea to run over the area that you are about to work on with a stud detector to make sure that there are no pipes or wires that you are about to drill or screw into. Redidrive or Self Drive Due to this it is necessary to use fixing specifically designed for use with plasterboard to ensure that, once fixed in place, it actually stays there, particularly if it’s large and heavy. Today, continuous hinges are used for quite a variety of jobs including cabinets and storage chests/boxes, desks, workbenches and also large versions are commonly used on bi-folding doors.

Due to their strength they are capable of supporting very heavy doors, gates and the similar, all the way up to and over 100kg! Different Types of Hinge and How to Use Them To comply with BS EN 16341 when fitting a fire door, only hinges that carry the Certfire label should be used In a well made barrel hinge, the barrel shaped hinge is so well morticed it is not at all visible when the doors are closed.Again as with others listed above, the spring loaded hinge isn’t specifically a type of hinge on it’s own, rather the fact that a spring loaded mechanism can be fitted to a variety of different types of hinge, mainly butt hinges. These hinges are generally fixed between 2 items that then allows the central item to pivot and move and open and close. A concealed, or kitchen cupboard hinge is recessed into the cupboard using a special drill bit called a hinge bore bit or Forstner bit. The centre, or pilot, part of the drill bit is very short so as to ensure the hole is drilled in exactly the right place but will not go right through the cupboard carcass. For full instructions see our project on how to fit concealed hinges here. Here follows a ranage of plasterboard fixings that, over the years, we have found to be the best and most secure, however none are suitable for lath and plaster, so see our fixing to lathe and plaster project here for more information.

Although strictly a specific plasterboard fixing, Corefix fixings were designed specifically for use with dot and dab walls. There is one hammer in fixing which we use a lot. Its very easy to use, simply hammer in and it will take a fair bit of weight. As these are quite a niche type of hinge, unless you are using them in the traditional manner stated above, they are only really used for one purpose and that’s to lift the movable object as it’s opened. For example if you have a door that opens on to a slope, fitting a rising butt hinge at the base will lift the door as it’s opened so it doesn’t hit the slope. Fire Butt Hinges The principle is simple. A pilot hole of 2 or 3mm is drilled into the board and the Redidrive bottom section is screwed into the hole. This is done without the screw in as the top of the Redidrive casing has a Philips head so it can be driven in using a drill/driver. This is a medium grade fixing and is not really suitable for large, heavy objects and is more suited to holding very small cupboards, small, lightweight shelves, utensil clips and the similar. Although this is technically a butt hinge, it’s important to distinguish it from the standard butt hinge above as it does operate differently.
