Royal Salute was launched by Chivas Brothers on 2 June 1953 in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on the day of her coronation as a luxury Scotch whisky brand. It takes its name from the traditional 21-gun salute and fittingly, Royal Salute whiskey are aged for a minimum of 21 years. Other releases from the Chivas Regal stable that I have tried include the Chivas Regal 12 yo Blended whisky and the Chivas Regal Extra blended whisky. Over the years, Royal Salute whisky has been launched to commemorate numerous occasions regarding the monarchy, including a 50 Year Old that marked Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee in 2002, Royal Salute 21 Year Old - The Diamond Tribute, a blend made for the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II's coronation and The Royal Salute Age Collection, a limited edition set of 10 blended Scotch whiskies that celebrated the Queen becoming the longest reigning British monarch in 2015. Numerous other bottlings such as the 62 Gun Salute, the Royal Salute 38 Year Old - Stone of Destiny and the Royal Salute 32 Year Old - Union of the Crowns have also been released to champion aspects of regality, always stunningly presented and containing the most opulent of blends. Royal Salute is unique in that the youngest ‘entry-level’ expression in its range is 21 years old. Since its launch Royal Salute has always been bottled in coloured ceramic decanters, the first of which was green, and made by Royal Doulton. It initially featured the Royal Coat of Arms, which was later replaced by the Chivas Brothers crest depicting Robert the Bruce.

A blend of over 53 rare malt and grain whiskies, to reflect the year Royal Salute was first crafted, the Royal Salute Coronation of King Charles III Edition is a beautifully rich and complex expression with notes of fresh redcurrants, dark chocolate praline, and freshly roasted chestnuts, and a palate of sweet figs and fresh ginger leading up to a long and rich finish with a playful spice. In 1842, Chivas Brothers were requested to supply provisions to the royal family at Balmoral Castle upon Queen Victoria’s first visit to Scotland. The Royal Salute brand’s home is Strathisla Distillery at Keith, Moray, Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1786 on the banks of the River Isla.This prestige whisky is distilled at the legendary Strathisla Distillery, which is now Chivas Brothers primary operating centre, but was originally founded in 1786 and holds the incredible distinction of being the oldest working distillery in the Highlands of Scotland.
