About this deal

Again, decent enough quality for Full HD, but it’s a shame they don’t use the full resolution at which the 512GW is capable of shooting in video mode. Should I buy the Nextbase 512GW? Considering most people use dash cameras to protect themselves against false insurance claims or in the event of an accident, Nextbase has also renewed it's partnership with SureThing!, offering those who buy a Series 2 dash cam 25% off a policy with the insurer - which is an increase on the previous 20% discount. Please be aware that formatting the SD card will delete all the data on the card, so if you wish to keep any footage, please copy this across before you start the formatting process. 3. On an Apple Mac Computer The 522GW has a built-in a polarising filter to reduce windscreen glare, so the footage is significantly better than that of the previous models. The 512GW struggled to deal with exposure changes (like when the sun came out from behind the clouds) and would often lead to very dark footage. The 522GW doesn't struggle with the same issues, as you can see in the footage below.

The Nextbase may not offer a great many extra features, but it does deliver in the most important area: image quality. The healthy data rate and Full HD resolution provide footage that’s faithful in colour and relatively devoid of artefacts. It’s more than up to the job of providing a useful view of the road ahead in case you need video evidence of an incident. If the Dash Cam does not appear as a drive on your PC, please press the reset button on the underside of your Dash Cam and try all the USB ports on your computer. Navigating through the various settings menus is simple since everything on-screen is clearly labelled. There are plenty of things to adjust, including settings for the frame rate and resolution, as well as switching audio recording on and off or setting a number plate for the camera car. Gently prise up the circuit board, it should unclip from the front housing (some small plastic lugs). This gives access to the battery inside the front housing. The new Nextbase range takes microSD cards up to 64GB - we're currently using 32GB microSD cards in ours. As for the batteries, they've been upgraded along with the rest of the dash cam hardware. They range now uses Lithium Polymer batteries (3.7V/320mAh) and intelligent battery charging with thermal cut out in the circuity – this ensures the batteries now charge at the correct rate depending on their temperature and dramatically prolongs their life. Should I buy one?Even after a long car journey there is virtually nothing in the battery, so often the last recording is corrupted as it cannot save the file correctly when the ignition is switched off. A GPS sensor is built-in, so information about location and speed is saved alongside the footage. This then allows the PC software to plot the location of the car on a map, which is a useful extra feature for proving where you were driving and at what speed to an insurer, should an accident happen. a) Before you start, you'll need to mount the SD or micro SD card on your Mac. If you have a Mac with an SD card slot, use that. If not, you’ll need an SD card adapter. The 512-G signals a new generation of dash cam. We’ve listened to consumers who noted that crystal clear image quality on an in car camera is vital. Having added a host of new features to ensure that the 512-G stands head and shoulders above others in the market, we believe the 512-G will be the best dash cam on the market for some time to come. “Glare and reflection can result in poor and distorted footage no matter how good your dash cam. But the polarising filter in the 512-G completely eradicates this problem completely – the first, and only dash cam in world to do so.” basically YES. If the rear camera is not plugged in at power on, then none of this happens ie no PiP appearance at all - and this is as it should be.

NEXTBASE 512GW DASH CAM (725/5346) - Argos Support

Only dash cam to have innovative polarising filter to completely remove windscreen glare and reflections.

This was the procedure I used. Its basically the same principle as the youtube video mentioned earlier in this thread for an earlier model.

Best-in-range dash cam launches: the 512-G - Nextbase

It is essential that you format your SD card every 2-3 weeks to delete the Protected filed and free up space on your memory card for new recordings. Plug your Dash Cam in. Ensure the cable is plugged directly into the Dash Cam and NOT via the mount. Its been working fine until recently, but the battery is now refusing to charge up to any usable level - even from a mains charger. When it detects the rear camera is plugged in at power on then it asks where you would like the PiP to appear which is ok, but then it enters fault mode in displaying a yellow PiP frame with no content. Power off/on is then required before the unit puts content in the frame - this is clearly a bug. It is a software fault when all that is required to cure it is to restart the software. Ok - off/on is all that's needed but the unit takes 3 to 4 seconds to go into power down mode and another 3 to 4 seconds to power up and perform as expected. Looping length can be set at two, three or five minutes. There’s a time-lapse option with durations of three minutes or two hours between frames, which are rather strange choices. It might have been useful to have a few options in-between. You can turn on a parking mode, where the 512GW will sit in standby mode and record two minutes of video every time it detects physical movement.

Stay sharp

The 522GW is the top spec, updated incarnation of the 512GW in Nextbase's brand-new dash cam range - the Series 2. As the GW in the name suggests, the 522 features GPS and WiFi - just like its predecessor - as well as a number of other impressive features. Resolution is 1440p @ 30fps with a 140-degree viewing angle and a built-in polarising filter. At a faster frame rate (60fps), resolution drops to 1080p. In the end I got a replacement battery and swapped it over myself - it was fairly straight forward and the camera is now working correctly. Very simple to use. It's similar enough to previous models to make it very easy to operate if you've had a Nextbase cam in the past, but with a number of revolutionary new features. Aside from the various improvements to the footage quality and whatnot, which we'll get into, the first noticeable difference is the mounting system of the 522GW. There’s a photo mode as well, which you can select instead of video mode. This captures images at a resolution of only 1920 x 1080. You can take pictures with the Record/OK button on the right-hand side of the screen. This could be a useful feature if you need to take some shots of damage at the scene of an accident, although the images aren’t very high resolution. Nextbase 512GW – Optional safety features Remove the 4 small cross-head screws from the corners of the circuit board (keep separately from the above screws, they are different.)

Increasingly, motorists are using footage to prove that they weren’t at fault during incidents so visual quality is a vital component of the purchasing decision. Insurers are also recognising this now, with 29 of the UK’s major insurers now accepting in car camera dash cam footage as part of an insurance claim. Furthermore, there are immediate financial benefits for motorists using a dash cam. I've fixed mobile phones and gopro cameras before so I have some skill in this area but I don't want to attempt the impossible.

On the Dash Cam's screen you'll see a menu of 3 options. Please select 'Mass Storage' on the Dash Cam screen and then OK so that only that displays on the screen. Alternatively, it’s possible to record Full HD (1920 x 1080) at 60fps. You can also choose Full HD and 720p at 30fps. At the top resolution, video is captured at 27Mbits/sec, so a 16GB memory card will be enough for 77 minutes of footage before the recoding loops to replace the oldest files with new ones. As usual, there’s microSD for storage, but none is supplied in the box – which is a shame for a dash cam that is well out of the budget territory. Impressively, Parking Mode is available on all the Series 2 Nextbase dash cams (122-522GW). If you're wondering where the 622GW is in the new range, it doesn't yet exist - so there's no 4K Series 2 dash cam. Not yet anyway, but we've heard that it's on the cards...
