About this deal

The LG C1 is a stellar performer when it comes to high dynamic range, with the Filmmaker mode offering highly accurate images for HDR10 and HLG, while the Cinema mode does the same for Dolby Vision. The Cinema Home mode, which uses a built-in light sensor to adjust picture brightness based on dynamic content metadata, can prove particularly useful when watching during the day. The LG C1 is a 4K (3,840 x 2,160) HDR smart TV and is the most affordable OLED from LG to feature the company’s advanced Alpha 9 Gen 4 processor. You can buy the C1 in 48in, 55in, 65in and 77in screen sizes, and a massive 83in screen size is set to join the lineup later this year. For this review, LG sent me the LG C1 65in, also known as the OLED65C16LA. You can access your webOS TV profile via your smartphone with the NFC Magic Tap app. Even better, NFC Magic Tap lets you mirror content from your mobile to the TV – and not just a single TV. You can mirror content from one TV in your home, to another, using the Room To Room Share function. This lets you view cable or satellite content on multiple screens, without the need for additional set-top boxes.

if you are new to OLED or looking for an excellent all rounder, the C1 is hard to beat at the price point. Speaking of which, the response times in the dedicated Game Optimiser mode are exceptional. I measured an input lag of 12ms on a 60Hz signal (both 1080p and 4K HDR), and this halved to an insanely fast 6ms on a 120Hz signal. This year LG has added a Prevent Input Delay (Input Lag) setting that can boost the response for 60Hz content, reducing the delay to below 10ms.LG: “The C1 OLED is tuned to make sure that every model in the series has the same optical characteristics to the human eye, no matter what parts are included in them. The a9 Gen4 AI Processor 4K, the brain of every LG OLED TV, is capable of automatically identifying and optimising the material you're watching for the best possible picture and sound. Plus, we have a new WebOS smart TV system with Freeview Play returning for 2021 with all the terrestrial catch-up services available out of the box. The menu system has also had a nice refresh to make it look more modern and the remote is also new and improved, retaining the superb magic remote pointer onscreen.

Moving to the video processing of the α9 Gen4 AI-enhanced processor, we found the upscaling was excellent with no issues seen at all from 576i, 1080i and 1080p content scaled to the panel resolution. Lines were straight and clean with no edge enhancement or ringing and there were no artefacts present. The LG produces clean and crisp upscaled images, but at the same time it can’t solve issues with really poor SD channels, but why would you have a 4K TV if you still watch channels like that? As we did with the 65-inch version we factory reset the LG 55C1 and then measured the picture presets to find which is the most accurate to the industry standards, out of the box, so we can view content as it was mastered and intended to be seen. Like all recent LG OLED TVs, the best preset for this is Filmmaker Mode (FMM) which switches off all unwanted processing with accurate colour and white balance retained. ISF bright and dark modes are also accurate for colour and white balance, but they do have picture processing switched on as a default, so you would need to switch these off manually. Filmmaker Mode is a one-button press solution that is free from any tampering from processing. It has no motion interpolation switched on and hits gamma BT.1886, D65 white and Rec.709 colour for SDR and BT.2020 colour, and ST.2084 PQ EOTF for HDR. On the C1, the out of the box OLED Pixel Brightness in FMM is set to 25 which equals 100 nits for dark room viewing, however, you can adjust the brightness to match your room conditions. The new Alpha 9 Gen 4 chipset ensures that lower-resolution content also looks good by applying AI-enhanced upscaling to 720p and 1080p sources. Blue Bloods on Now looks surprisingly watchable despite the lower resolution, with the processor upscaling the image as effectively as possible, while also applying noise reduction and sharpening where appropriate. LG C1 OLED review: HDR performanceL - Tuner type - Both TVs have digital terrestrial tuners. Other letters indicate things like satellite tuners, or tuners for specific regions. Some TVs are sold in regions with dual tuners. If you’re mad about movies, you’ll love Filmmaker Mode. Designed in collaboration with filmmakers and Hollywood studios, Filmmaker Mode lets you experience the cinematic vision, exactly as the director intended. Overriding the TV’s own motion and picture processing, Filmmaker Mode presents the correct aspect ratio, colour and frame rate – just as the filmmakers intended.

While the LG G1, Sony A90J and Panasonic JZ1500 can go that little bit brighter [...], in isolation the C1 gets very close to that level at a lower entry point.. The C1 runs the latest version of LG’s webOS smart platform, and supports HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG – but not HDR10+. All the major content streaming platforms are present and correct, including Freeview Play, which was absent on LG’s TVs last year.LG OLED displays have been certified as having 100 percent colour fidelity by renowned global testing organisation Intertek. This means that the colours you see on the screen are very near to the original image's hues. As a result, everything you see appears to be exactly as the designer intended. As a gaming TV, the C1 also has all the bases covered to be a complete all-rounder for film, TV and gaming with four HDMI 2.1 ports and features which include VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) and an HGiG (HDR Gaming Interest Group) setting. There is also G-Sync and AMD support which makes the C1 one of the most advanced gaming sets of 2021. Motion blur is reduced by advanced motion handling technology, resulting in smoother action and a crisper viewing experience. Even in a fast-paced sport, notice the minute and subtle details of each play. Prices valid in stores (all including VAT) until close of business on 2nd November 2023. (Some of these web prices are cheaper than in-store, so please mention that you've seen these offers online.) The Rec.709 results took a little bit more care to balance out the errors we had without using too much processing power within the corrections. If you push the Colour Management System on any LG too hard, you can get lovely looking graphs, but major posterisation errors and artefacts with actual viewing material onscreen. So some care is required when making adjustments. However, we did manage to get a very accurate looking gamut result with most points at 75% and below where they should be and DeltaE errors well under three, which means there are no visible errors seen.
