So, whilst this dehumidifier is portable, you’re probably not going to want to move it around too much.

How Much Does a Dehumidifier Cost to Run? [UK GUIDE] How Much Does a Dehumidifier Cost to Run? [UK GUIDE]

As you’ve probably realised, it’s often difficult to estimate the cost of running a dehumidifier. Aside from the machine’s power rating, the ongoing costs are affected by humidity, temperature, energy saving features and running time. Meaco Arete is my best little cellar-dwelling friend. No idea if he’s actually helping anything, but he collects loads of water, and it makes me feel better about the damp situation, so I absolutely love him"(Recommended by Mumsnetter cimena) It's fair to say that most dehumidifiers aren't the most stylish of appliances, which is why the De'Longhi Tascuigo AriaDry Multi Dehumidifier is something of a breath of fresh air amidst the usual boxy white plastic designs. It’s a difficult question to answer, as the cost varies wildly. Factors such as the temperature, type of dehumidifier ( desiccant or refrigerant) and energy-saving features all affect the running costs. Manufacturers also confuse the issue by adding the phrase “energy efficient” to every product description – whether it’s deserved or not. 7. Best mid-budget dehumidifier: Challenge 12 Litre Dehumidifier

The Pro Breeze 20L Premium is powerful, so higher energy usage isn't unexpected, but compared to the MeacoDry Arete One 20L Dehumidifier which averages energy usage of 216W that is still fairly high. Overall, I found this one of the easiest dehumidifiers to use out of all the options I've tested. Especially thanks to its Smart humidity sensor which automatically controls the dehumidifier for you to achieve your desired humidity level. More on that later. Performance

And, whilst this Russell Hobbs number is cheaper upfront, running costs are higher, with the 20L dehumidifier using 440W of energy compared to Meaco's 20L Arete One which uses 216W on average. Plus, the Arete One offers a built-in air purifier which this model does not.

How do dehumidifiers work?

The castors are built into the bottom of the unit so you can wheel it from room to room. These work great on hard floor but on a carpeted area it just wouldn’t budge. We have a dehumidifier and use it when the heat is on occasionally to make sure the rooms are dry. We live in an old house, and I am surprised and what it removes. We open wardrobes in bedrooms and use it every so often. Haven't used it yet, but ours was an Argos own brand, and it is excellent. We have had it for years."(Brand recommended by Mumsnet user billy1966) Simple and standard, the only additional feature is that you can choose between their four pre-set humidity levels to match your and your home's needs. All you’ll need to do is pop it in a corner and let it run, it costs around nine pence an hour so that it won’t break the bank, and when it is full, the dehumidifier will automatically shut off to avoid spillage. The only downside is that at 47dB, it is between a whisper and a regular voice; it is a little noisier than its competitors, so we recommend keeping it out of the bedroom at night. The advantages of this type of dehumidifier are that they tend to be larger, more energy efficient and much more widely available. The problem is that they don’t work well in lower temperatures as the coils need to be colder than the room, or they start to freeze. Once that happens, a compressor dehumidifier focuses on de-frosting itself over reducing humidity, so they aren’t a great option for garages or cellars. They also tend to be much noisier, and depending on your noise-level preference, this can irritate people. Should you leave a dehumidifier on all the time?
