About this deal

Overall, this was a great debut and I definitely recommend it for anyone that enjoys fantasy romance. Idk, something about it really brought in my attention, and I found myself curious to learn more as the world was built up. Speaking of which, I think there’s going to be a romance between Mari and Griffin and I’d totally be on board of this ship.

The FROM BLOOD AND ASH comparison people are making for this book is actually very on point, and I wish I'd seen that this book was being touted alongside that and A COURT OF MIST AND FURY because I'm not a fan of either of those books and I would have saved both the author and myself some trouble otherwise. To make it out of enemy territory, she’ll have to navigate back-stabbing royals, dark magic, and deadly beasts.i would say this was an extremely tropey read, but i'm not complaining bc it was exactly right for me atm and i. Add to that a strong heroine that tries to escape into dangerous woods with a prisoner she doesn’t really trust, magic and beasts and I’m sold. Kane is a infamous womanizer that never falls in love, but he ends up falling for Arwen too swiftly(? The first of a planned trilogy, we follow Arwen, a healer who has powers she doesn't quite understand. I don't think I would necessarily recommend this book, but I do hope the story comes to a conclusion. In any case, when it comes to debuts, I tend to give them another go before I say definitively whether they are good or not. The pace was kinda unbalanced, we have chapters that were slow in my opinion, and others that flow quite quickly. The world is developed and vivid without being overwhelming, the magic system and political unrest are intriguing, and the dialogue is excellent. Unfortunately, he’s as infuriating as he is cunning-and seems to take twisted pleasure in playing on Arwen’s deepest fears.

It doesn’t feel as if we’re mere expectations, watching outside of the story, but essential elements living in it at the same time. I am a firm believer that disliking a character does not mean they were badly written, or that there is anything necessarily wrong with them.

I was so sure that this was going to be another slow burn that was actually more like a wildfire, but I ended up being wrong, and I am so glad that I was. I, like so many others, was lucky enough to find this book on TikTok and read it quite literally in one sitting.
