About this deal

As we do with all our reviews, we measured the out of the box settings to find those that get close to the industry standards that are used to master all TV and film content.

The 50-inch A7GQ we are reviewing has a VA 60Hz (8bit+FRC) panel that has a measured black level of 0. Viewing angles are not a strong point on the Hisense and as soon as you get over 20 degrees off-axis colour and gamma start to drift noticeably. The Hisense A7G is a QLED LCD TV that sits in the middle of the range for 2021 and has a number of features you would expect to only see on higher-end models. Along with HDR 10+ and Dolby Vision, the Hisense 55U7QFTUK is Dolby Atmos-enabled, but the modest two 10W speaker arrangement doesn’t do much to create a sense of space to the sound. The rear legs of the stand do provide cable management so you can run cables out of sight from the front of the TV. When it comes to the picture presets, the HDR Day and Night presets actually look worse than the default Standard setting. The uuid2 cookie is set by AppNexus and records information that helps in differentiating between devices and browsers.

If you are an enthusiast you will be aware of the downfalls with LCD technologies and using them in a dark room, and there is no difference here, but as a living room workhorse the Hisense is very good indeed. The feature set of the A7G is improved from previous generations, with the addition of gaming features positioning the Hisense as a cheaper alternative to the likes of LG and Samsung in that area. The U7 uses a quad-core processor for its operating system, which feels slick and fast with no hanging or crashing. With SD SDR content, colour trumps precision with a predictable softness and lack of sharpness and clarity, but it is watchable.

Motion was also reasonably good with 24fps material looking decent for the most part, with only occasional judder noticeable with Ultra Smooth Motion switched off. The desktop stand also looks more metallic than it actually is, and its ’open’ style minimises the impact the TV has on your decor. Blacks are good in a well-lit room but there is black crush evident, which will probably go unnoticed by the demographic this TV is aimed at.

It has good image quality out of the box, that while not reference or highly accurate, is good enough for the use case this TV will fulfil. If you have an area (or whatever furniture you’re using) big enough to accommodate both the A7G and a soundbar – and you will want to partner this TV with a soundbar – then it’s fine. IMAX Enhanced certification promises clearer and brighter images, along with better optimised sound with supported content. This allows soundtracks that support the technology to place sounds above and around the listener with compatible kit. It is perfectly serviceable for everyday soaps, news channel or documentaries, but if you want more depth and substance to your TV audio I would suggest that a soundbar is a must. Hisense is also adopting some more advanced gaming features with the inclusion of ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). This being an OLED panel, you can count deep black levels, excellent contrast and wide viewing angles with little to no loss of colour saturation.
