About this deal

Lila is so worried that when her grandfather whispers to her the secret of rain, she decides to go and talk to the sky herself.

Lila’s grandfather reveals to her the secret of rain and she climbs the mountain to tell the sky the saddest thing she knows. There has been no rain in Lila’s Kenyan village for many weeks and “Without water there can be no life”, her mother says. This is an amazing book that encourages children to consider that others live differently than we do.Your class will underline the letters that should be capital letters and add in the full stops to punctuate the sentences. With the option to include modifying adjectives or nouns and with examples of expanded noun phrases provided, this worksheet is great for self and peer assessment or as a learning display prompt. This unit is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and uses an enquiry-approach to develop student progression. Lila and the Secret of Rain by David Convey Illustrator Jade Daly- Children’s Illustrated Colour Picture Book- The book narrates the story of Lila a young girl who lives in a Kenyan village.

Also, for older students, the placement of symbols, like the sun and later the dark clouds, within the illustrations would prove interesting for analysis. David Conway is a children's picture book author who has written for Hodder, Random House, Frances Lincoln and Gullane Children's Books. Follow the story of Lila and her village in Kenya, and how she saves her people from drought by learning the secret of rain from her grandfather. The resource and vocabulary are quite challenging so the working with some of Year 1 children in a focus group is recommended. Its about bravery, courage and hope, narrated beautifully through expressive illustrations by Jude Daly.

Lila and the Secret of Rain: the perfect book to teach about different cultures and contrasting localities in KS1 with related worksheets, activities and display materials. Students use the focus text as a basis to develop their reading, writing and SPaG skills and engage with a range of comprehension and discussion based activities. Jude Daly’s color-drenched illustrations perfectly evoke both the parched landscape and vibrant village life. and inference, especially in the context of Lila's pleas to the sky and how her emotion brings about the rain storm. In desperation, she seeks her grandfather's wisdom about the secret of rain and then leaves her village to try and accomplish the impossible.

Also, there seems to be no pattern that I can identify, but some pages have text on one page or two pages of text in 4 or less different frames within the pages. Some pages the texts is on top of the illustration, on other pages it is isolated to a section of negative space.

Beautiful language – ‘the sky was ebony with emotion’ – accompanies delicate illustrations that convey the sparseness of life and landscape. The crops are withering, the cattle are suffering, and the heat is so unbearable the villagers cannot do their regular work.Multicultural: 2008 - In this multicultural folk tale, the story of an African village's need for rain is solved with Lila's talk with the sky.
