About this deal

Told from each woman's point of view this novel criss-crosses backwards and forwards in time, stopping on key events in their lives. She has won acclaim for her performances in BBC dramas Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Little Dorrit and Hattie, as well as comedies Little Britain, Saxondale and Nighty Night.

Her debut novel Never Greener was chosen as WHSmith Fiction Book of the Year 2018, was nominated for Debut of the Year at the British Book Awards, was a Zoe Ball Book Club pick, and was a Sunday Times bestseller for fifteen weeks, three weeks at number one. Grace is eighty-nine, she’s proud and independent and enjoys an early morning swim in the sea, no matter what the weather. Ruth Jones: I suppose – like you mentioned – the warmth, and linking back to everything that’s going on in the world at the moment, I want it to be something people can escape to. For Alys, Grace’s daughter, Elin’s mother she has been constantly running from herself and has come close throughout her life to time running out.The two women could not have been more different as they have different ambitions and backgrounds, even though they are bound by friendship and loyalty. For Grace time is running out to solve the family rifts that have been going on for the last thirty years. Her debut novel Never Greener was a number one bestseller, and her second - Us Three - is out in 2020. A respected head teacher at the local school, Elin couldn't bear anyone to find out the truth about her mother.

It's going to take all of Grace's will to right the wrongs of the past and she is running out of time. The conflicts and emotions are real and raw and you’ll find yourself relating to so many arguments and points of tension. The plot is mostly set in the present, although there are a few moments where we flash back to different stages in the past 70 years.

Later on, she attended the University of Warwick, after which she moved to Cardiff to study at the Royal College of Music and Drama. Like many chic lit books the characters learn all about love; but unlike a lot of books, they experience the bad parts of love as well as the good. Elin, Becca’s mother is a headteacher, organised and knows what is best for everyone; her husband, her daughter and even her grandmother. She has no idea quite what will happen next and whatever it is, it is sure to cause trouble in the family. The ending took me totally by surprise and I had to read the last couple of chapters twice because my eyes leaked (I sobbed) and the print blurred.

To do this she must locate her stranged daughter Alys but she risks betraying her grandaughter's trust in doing so. Elin is busy organising a surprise birthday party for Grace and as usual it has got completely out-of-hand, exasperating both her husband Greg and Beca. I just loved the idea that when you’re very young, a teenager, you just think old people are old people and that they couldn’t possibly understand what you’re going through as a teenager. Ruth Jones made her debut in fiction writing when she penned “Never Greener,” a novel that was published in 2018. It got into the depths of mother / daughter / grandmother / great grandmother relationships in such a wonderful and both heartbreaking and endearing way.The author pens a beautiful story that includes an exploration of the family trees of the two leads, their character profiles, and maps of Billericay and Barry with key landmarks and key sights. And I found that quite inspiring as a place, so the town of Dylan’s Quay in the book is based on New Quay. It was in this year that Stan Stennett a comedian producer invited her to perform at the Porthcawl Pavilion in Dick Whittington. It is such a well written book, with the characters being fully formed and believable, it had me rooting for the best outcome for them all. This combination made for a BAFTA award-winning comedy that would soon become one of the biggest shows in the United Kingdom right behind Little Britain.
