About this deal

May has tried to tell a story of life and loss for young Glaswegian lads seeking their fortunes, but with his concentration on trying to evoke the feel of the sixties though questionable literary devices, his disrespect for the integrity of the reader, and a naivety that just isn't there in the Lewis books, he ultimately fails to develop any of his characters, leaving them two-dimensional. Runaway is another Peter May thriller where Past is a ruthless Hunter — it lives in its own preys, dormant, waiting for the right time to wake up and hunt! With several twists and a very unexpected reveal at the end, this was another excellent offering from a great storyteller.

Each has his own reasons, but all are convinced their band, The Shuffle, can make it big in the Big Smoke. Also my son owns Church on the Hill at Battlefield Monument which is mentioned as Jack walks up the hill from the Victoria Hospital. I worked for a planning consultant in the 1960s and we frequently represented public groups (rate payers associations or housing waiting list groups) against local council’s attempts to erect yet more tower blocks or large developments of flats. The third and final chapter of this series, The Chessmen, takes Fin on an investigation to solve an illegal game-hunting crime that reunites him with a face of his past, Whistler Macaskill, and leads him to discover pieces of the past that could destroy the future. Being a similar vintage to Jack and the author I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the flashbacks to the 60s when music was “proper music” as I continually remind my sons. I laughed and cried especially the fate of ‘Jobby Jeff’ and Jack missing his beloved Racheal by two years. In 1996, Machair was nominated for the Best Drama Serial Award at the 17th International Celtic Film and Television Festival. The grandson is enlisted to break Maurice out of hospital and to help him move as he so weak and sick he can barely walk. The housing around us became more sparse, and up ahead I saw that the street lights came to an abrupt end, leaving only darkness beyond them. As this particular novel is a standalone and is based in part on some of the author's own lived experience, well. The publicity blurb for the book tells us that parts of the story are based on May's own experiences of running away to London as a teenager.

This murder mystery series takes place on the Isle of Lewis where life is unforgiving and the fear of God is apparent. This extraordinary work by Peter May explores how aspirations and expectations shape us, and the pivotal yet changeable role that friendships play in our lives. Since Author May is a veteran of the TV mills and decades of thriller- and mystery-writing, he's developed that habit of story-telling and be damned if you, reviewer, wish for something a bit more textured, true to life. They also have a brush with John Lennon, and are drawn into the very strange world of the Victoria Hall in the East End of London.
