The goal was to satisfy his own need for constant stimulus: “I watch something on Netflix,” he explained at the time, “and it’s like, ‘That was the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. I’m In Love With You’ follows recent releases ‘Happiness’ and ‘Part Of The Band’, the band’s acclaimed comeback single which Pitchfork praised as “ the kind of grand, playful pop song that only this band could pull off”. The track’s campfire singalong, reminiscent of early Bon Iver, masks swirls of sonic detritus; snatches of studio chatter rise and fall, as do bubbles of electronics and burps of brass, while the momentum constantly splutters like the battered car on the album’s artwork. There are still a handful of serviceable pop-rock singles: "The City," built on a big, blocky drum loop, has a bit of the forlorn romanticism of Bloc Party circa "I Still Remember. Matthew Healy's pinched vocals hit that ice-cream-headache sweet spot between pretty-boy quaver and adenoidal yelp, and the version of "cool" he seems to be gesturing towards feels endearingly carbon-dated and translated from a few different languages into English.

The 1975’ was recorded at the Motor Museum in Liverpool, with Arctic Monkeys collaborator Mike Crossey co-producing alongside the band’s Matthew Healy and George Daniel. From their album titles (see 2016’s word count-defying I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It) to Healy’s convoluted and contradictory lyrics and paragraph-long interview quotes, everything that surrounds the band feels purposefully OTT.If Matty Healy, their 31-year-old frontman and outspoken avatar, had his way, the band’s fourth album, Notes on a Conditional Form, would have arrived mere months after 2018’s A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships. Their third studio album, ‘A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships’, also won ‘Mastercard British Album of the Year’ at the 2019 ceremony.
