About this deal

What he does causes trouble for him and then he erases himself thinking the world will be better without him. Summer in London is hot, the hottest on record, and there's been a murder in THE TRI: the high-rise home to resident know-it-alls, Nik and Norva. I remember being utterly gobsmacked that a simple book, with words on a page, could be so powerful that it could make me sob.

It’s another story written from a boy’s perspective with an underlying sense of loneliness (which seems to feature strongly in all of my books), but I think this book has a lot more humour. He’s a total menace to his teachers and big sister, but has a soft side too: he rescued his dog, Monster, from being run over and checks on his elderly neighbour, Reg, after school. I would recommend this awesome book to anybody over 8 years old since the story might not be easy to understand for people younger than that. The story will certainly help in opening conversations with children about bullying and the ways to handle it.

I did enjoy seeing Maxwell's soft side through an interaction with his sister at the school centenary ball, just before the things go disastrously wrong for him. I think the key was to show quite early on that things at home were quite stressful for Maxwell, and therefore there could be a reason behind his bad behaviour. He heads home and notices the subtle changes around him – the headless, plastic flamingo that he broke in a neighbour’s garden now has a head, the front gate he broke five years ago is now fixed… It was so rewarding to gently create this strange, changed world around him. You get to fully understand and sympathise with the main character who makes some terrible choices but because of the situation he is in you can understand why. Maxwell somehow convinces his sister and best friend (both of whom don't know him at all) to help him find out how to get back, which thankfully, they do. Our Reading Den is a place for you and your child to discover and share books, find new authors and explore stories. Maxwell is a deeply caring, loving child - he loves the dog he rescued, he provides great comfort to his sister when she is bullied and he has befriended a forgetful old man, Reg.

I think there are plenty of opportunities for teachers to use the book in class, certainly with all the links to the Mary Celeste and Amundsen. The themes are really relevant to modern day children, this time focusing on the breakdown of a parental relationship and the feelings that come with it. This book is excellent reading for anyone but I can really imagine it helping any child who might have chosen the wrong path and desperately wants to make amends but doesn’t know how. My favourite character was Reg because he never remembers who Maxwell ( the main character who is erased) is and so everytime Maxwell visits him, he has to remind Reg who he is. It's also a huge lesson in empathy for children who come from more stable homes, and who don't present challenging behaviour - here Thompson draws back the curtain and provides an insight in to the struggles of a naughty boy.Being erased really causes Maxwell to evaluate and grow as he comes to see what impact he has had on various people in his life and I loved seeing the development in his character. Once your child has discovered a new book we invite them to create their own online Reading Den and fill a bookshelf of their own. He can do good things, and often does, when he’s not acting self-destructively, such as providing his elderly, forgetful neighbour with much-appreciated company and saving Monster, who was injured and abandoned when Maxwell first found him. Another brilliant aspect of this novel (and all of Thompson's stories) is her subtlety; the problem isn't just served up straight away and you get given parts of the jigsaw chapter by chapter.
