In short, The Ember Blade is everything I could possibly want in an epic fantasy novel, and so much more. Man, just wanted to say how proud I am of and for you, that you’re gettin such sterling reviews – I just perused a few over on Goodreads. I audibly gasped several times during the Misson Impossible-style finale that covered the final 200 pages of the story. There’s battles across bridges, dashes through passageways, struggles in water and fights on dining tables, all of which are done well, but….
The interactions between the characters are extremely engaging, with each of them possessed of credible personal sufferings, troubles, strengths and aspirations. This is really when the book begins to shine: the friendships feel natural and lifelike, but Wooding really excels at depicting broken relationships within the group. But then his father is executed for treason, and he and his best friend Cade are thrown into a prison mine, doomed to work until they drop.A new bestseller: this is a fast-moving coming-of-age trilogy featuring a strong cast of diverse characters, brilliant set-pieces and a strong character and plot driven story. It is a coming of age story, a desperate act of revolution, a struggling morality play, and a meditation on family and loyalty. Literary wise, what’s most evident is the kind of subversion of expectations, undermining of heroic ideals, and crushing of hopes that is most often associated with grimdark. Thrown into a prison mine they plan their escape - only to be overtaken by events when they're rescued, and promptly find themselves in the middle of an ambush.
I loved each member of the ‘fellowship of the blade’ (for want of a better description) and in Garric and Grub I’ve added two more awesome characters to my personal pantheon of favourite characters in fantasy, which includes Gandalf, Aragorn, Silk, Glokta and Logen Ninefingers. Eldritch Abomination: The Beast of Skavengard, and unholy mass of tentacles, eyes and mouths that is trapped on the island-palace of Skavengard. It seriously doesn't matter whether you're a fan of classic, epic, or grimdark fantasy (even better if all three), there's a place for you here.I can’t tell you anything more about the game since it’s not been announced yet but it’s gonna be soooo good! Wooding’s world is also possessed of a magic which is soft but intensely deep and powerful, with far-reaching consequences. It was almost impossible to put this down, especially at the end of a chapter, when I just had to start the next one to know what happened next. Honor Before Reason: Garric will keep his oaths, no matter how impractical or dangerous to himself they might be.
A well-written tale of revolution, dark magic, and a quest for an ancient game-changing artifact set in a well-built and well-realised epic fantasy world. My conclusion is that this story is probably “the prologue” to the real story, and that it should never have been written. com and man, well done, and I really look forward to havin some spare cash so that I can support and get onto this one as well.He faithfully adopts their faith, manners, dress, culture and cuisine, while also enjoying a dalliance with a local Krodan girl, albeit against her family’s wishes. When I’m not in panels I shall very likely be in the bar, er, ‘networking’ or in the gaming room nerding out on all the boardgames I can find all at once. Although there is a now-typical cliff-hanger ending, there is enough resolution to make the reader feel that the journey (so far) has been worth it.
