About this deal

Oxenbury's human figures are weirdly simple against vibrant, lush backgrounds, but those backgrounds do the heavy lifting for a narrative about passing seasons and growth. This is a lovely book about a young boy who watches everything around him grow, but feels that he himself isn't growing. From this simple beginning grows a story that celebrates those little changes that tell us we're growing up! Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook). Beautifully presented as an illustrated paperback, it is the perfect book for all little children wondering if they’re growing too.

For another revival of an old book you might like to look at Up in the Tree by Margaret Atwood and younger children looking for a book about growing might enjoy One Year With Kipper by Mick Inkpen. Well suited to a 3-D adventure, The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig: Pop-up Edition by Eugene Trivizas, illus. The original text was published in 1947, however, the illustrations have been recently updated by Helen Oxenbury, a wise choice. The illustrations perfectly capture the gentle spirit of Krauss's classic text (HarperCollins, 1947). The idea of putting away warm woollens (or, in this time and age, winter polar fleeces) is a recklessly optimistic one in the part of the world I currently live in, but it's not a bad device to show how the boy realises that he's growing as well. Starred Review */ PreS-K—A young boy watches a puppy, chicks, and the world around him grow through the seasons.

It can help to show the infinite variety of life (and life requirements) on the planet – although these aspects might be a bit much for some children. A little boy watches all summer long as the trees, grass, flowers, corn, chicks and puppy grow up right before his eyes. A father and his four children--a toddler, a preschool boy and two older girls--go on the traditional bear hunt based on the old camp chant: ``We're going to catch a big one. As The Growing Story unfolds, children will love spotting the visual clues to indicate the passage of time. But when winter comes along and his last year’s pants are too tight and his sleeves too short, he realizes that he must have grown, too!Summary: A timeless if somehow old-fashioned story of the seasonal rhythms of nature and the growing of living things (including little children), with charming illustrations and which would make a good present. Share the universal experience of growing up and discover the rhythms of the seasons in this wonderfully timeless story. As he sees a puppy grow into a dog and a seed turn into a flower, the boy worries that he is not growing taller. Throughout the story, he continues to ask if his mother if he, too, will grow like his puppy and barnyard chicks, their measurable growth marking the passage of time for him. Having gotten to know each other in Charley’s First Night (2012), Henry and his dog Charley are now thick as thieves.

Acclaimed illustrator Helen Oxenbury, famous for picture books like We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, has provided new, contemporary illustrations to bring the book into the 21st Century. To notice how nature shows both growth, as when the chicks grow taller and the corn grows higher, and also decline, as when the pears fall off the tree and the days grow shorter. With all of the changes that he can see taking place around him, he is concerned that he doesnt seem to be growing.I love this book for its measured simplicity and its cheerful take on that bittersweet reality familiar to every parent: our children grow up far too fast! They see the first signs of spring growing in the fields and the little boy asks his mother if he and the puppy will grow too.
