The chief's [chief whip's] conclusion is: keep writing notes – he needs the information, so does the PM. Kondazian’s deft hand and sophisticated touch invites these complexities to live in the imagination…. There are, admittedly, some liberties taken with her story, but more to flesh out the grey areas than to significantly alter or misrepresent anything about her.

The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Is there really a gender duality or is it more about conforming to the varying demands of the fictionalized drama? I only wish that all cultures could experience The Whip; especially the ones that are oppressive to women.Private investigator Rex Carver is hired to keep an eye on a German au pair companion who works for a wealthy Swiss woman. Sewing binding for longer life, where the book block is actually sewn (smythe sewn/section sewn) with thread before binding which results in a more durable type of binding. Charley Parkhurst’ aka Charlotte Parkhurst but whose to say what was what back in a day when records of births and every moment of a person/peoples lives was not written down or reported on social media.

While the look of Ciaran Bagnall’s set is sleek and light – a table or a cross is lowered aerially – the drama feels heavy and the pace lags. I would highly recommend this book and not only to readers, who love a good historical novel, but to all readers. He feels possessive and protective of Charlotte/Charley, but is also attracted to her, and it baffles and angers him that she does not easily submit to those desires. We need to be reminded of the hope for society that awaits whenever positions of impact and power are helmed by the hearts and minds of women.

I was also intrigued by the idea of a fact-based story about Charley Parkhurst, a woman who not only lived for most of her life as a man, but who was one of the most respected “whips,” aka stagecoach drivers, for Wells Fargo. Amazing read about a little known character in history, as well as interesting character studies of those who made up the old West. It's not so much a western or a historical romance as it is a study in the human condition, running the full gamut of emotions. I think that Charley's story holds a good deal of fascination and information about social history during this period, however the book reads too much like a fictional work to be taken to seriously. Although a complicated and flawed character, Charley is a fascinating, inspirational woman we care for. Her first days at the orphanage were hardly auspicious, as the overworked, uncaring caretaker sees fit to lock the crying infant in a laundry closet at night so she will not keep the other children awake.

This book, inspired by the real life story of Charlie Parkhurst, reads like a novel, yet you can’t stop thinking that it could actually be Charlie’s story. At the end of every Commons corridor in the weeks before MPs broke up for the summer recess in 1993, there seemed to be a Conservative whip lurking. The early scenes switch quickly and appear transparent in their function to set up themes and characters, especially in the shouty parliamentary debates between the Whigs and Tories. A gripping page-turner explores themes of self-identity, forgiveness, and survival, and captivates the reader from multiple perspectives. The invention of Lee Colton is interesting and provocative, because it is Lee’s idea to initially disguise Charlotte as a boy so she can stay with him once the orphanage is divided along gender lines once the new headmistress arrives. David Heathcoat-Amory, a Tory deputy chief whip after the 1992 general election, says they are essential to party politics: "If you want a democracy, you have to have political parties, and if you have political parties you have to have discipline, and if you are to have discipline you have to have whips and whips' offices.
