Exactly 900 years ago last autumn, the English crown was rocked by the greatest maritime tragedy ever to afflict this kingdom. Richard FitzStephen, the skipper of a splendid vessel, the Blanche-Nef, stepped forward to greet the king. The author explains quite concisely the tremendous role which the man played in his country’s history, and what’s more, he essentially manages to make an exciting display out of his story worthy of a great novel. The White Ship” is a well-conceived book in theory but completely misses its target and rather offers a slow text lacking cohesive strands making it one of Spencer’s weaker works (the worst one, in my opinion).
