About this deal

He is at his most affecting when he describes the emptiness and suicidal thoughts that he has experienced in the midst of depression.

While a lot of the technicalities of boxing went over my head, it's his pure authenticity and rawness that draws you in. Tellingly he mentions the impact his OCD, as well as his temperament, has on training: “Listen, you’ll have to give me a goal, even if it’s an outrageous one, because I ain’t quitting. This book opened my eyes a bit, his struggle with mental illness, his addictions, and where he's at now. It’s made me want to dust off my old running shoes and get back out there, who am I kidding that’s definitely not going to happen. This book is about the obstacles he has faced in the ring, backroom politics, and much more importantly in life.Tyson Fury ranks as one of boxing’s top personalities of the last 50 years among Ali, Duran, Tyson (Mike) and Mayweather. I always make how good an autobiography is if I feel I become a bigger fan of the person after I finished the book than I was when I started the book.

It would have been nice to have had a bit more about them, but ultimately, it is a boxing book and it serves that purpose excellently - the preparation and training involved, his showmanship and self-belief and he breaks down his thought processes during his fights really well. It also gives us an insight to his personal life with wife Paris (who I also love) and the heart break of miscarriages and marriage troubles. He grew up and underwent an incredible journey that saw him claim heavyweight gold from Wladimir Klitschko. Such honesty about Mental Health is desperately needed in todays world and hearing it from the heavy weight champion of the world is sure to help rid the stigma surrounding it. Anthony Joshua, a long-standing target of Fury, is scheduled to fight Alexander Usyk on September 25 in a rematch after the Ukranian beat the former heavyweight champion on points at the London Stadium, last year.Josh Taylor will defend his undisputed super-lightweight titles against Jack Catterall in Scotland on Saturday, February 26, live on Sky Sports Action and Sky Sports Main Event from 7pm. He looks back at his incredible life and career, examining what's really defined him, from his travelling upbringing to his fighting family, his beloved wife Paris and his 6 beautiful children, his mental health battles and his rise, fall and rise again in and out of the ring. He now has one eye on the door, despite the money always on the table, knowing the end is on the horizon. His honesty of the shady dealing and politics of the boxing world was an interesting read I had never thought of - or was aware of - before. Fury makes it clear that he’s always maintained old school methods, that “the concept of fighting… hasn’t evolved because it doesn’t need to”; “[Klitschko] had surrounded himself with doctors, weightlifters, sports geeks and top chefs, while my training camp was running out of a tin shed in a muddy field in Liverpool and I slept in a caravan. This Biography my the man himself just shows that no matter who you are mental health issues and depression should never be taken likely and makes you aware that even warriors like Tyson Fury are not invincible.

He shortly after this proceeded to face arguably the heaviest hitting man in boxing ever, taking his biggest shots and getting up off the canvas in the process. He shares fascinating blow-by-blow accounts of his inspiring victories against Deontay Wilder and Dillian Whyte, his recovery from the depths of depression, and his journey to reclaiming his world heavyweight title.

He is a deep thinker, his “Gypsy King” persona deals in hyperbole (“I bent the fabric of reality, twisting this way and that”) and is a promoter’s dream, a line in willed extroversion designed to sell fights and generate headlines. Tyson Fury's belts will be on the line for the second time when he steps into the ring with fellow British heavyweight Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium this coming April. Fury will be in Manchester on September 15 but will be around the north west including in Liverpool (July 3) and Warrington (September 2), although the venue for the latter has yet to be confirmed. Some passages were really great - the description of some of his fights (eg the Klitscko fight), for example, and I also found his description of his mental health issues very moving, particularly the deep hole he sank in after the Klitschko fight. Many of Nigel Cawthorne's books are compilations of popular history, without footnotes, references or bibliographies.
