About this deal

And perhaps it's not - these last 10 days haven't been the time to express it and dig into it, because people are obviously upset and very emotional.

Do you think we can address the statistics talked about in your book about Black oversaturation in the mental health system, if we don't address the legacy of - not just Monarchy because Parliament has had more power since around 1650 - but Britain and it's politics and it's history?Recommended reading, especially for those non-black British who are determined to hide behind their assertion of colour-blindness. You know one has to respect Elizabeth and respect her time on the throne and respect what she's done to the institution. For a long time I realised I don't really belong in the UK despite being born there and working there and now I have the right to say so. From a white perspective David's self-penned story is illuminating in such a sad and distressing way unyet he eventually manages to find his way through societies expectations which are projected onto him.

It is incredibly interesting how he dissects the cause of his psychosis, from the Socio-environmental to the racial discrimination he experienced from a young age. From June to September 2010, he played Theseus in the premiere of Moira Buffini's play Welcome to Thebes at the National Theatre in London. Nowadays social services would be involved for far less than being shoved on top of the wardrobe in the dark for the sake of hide and seek (me) or hurling yourself down the stairs (Harewood). And I think that's what the book points to, is how we each have to be incredibly mentally strong just to survive. But,you know, as you get older you sort of become happy with yourself and you settle with yourself, and there's also the work I've done on myself.

Slaves were given surnames derived from those of their owners, hence Harewood's ancestors had to take their name from the Lascelles' title. The show featured the Guy Barker orchestra, with leader Cynthia Fleming and guest artists Madeline Bell, Gregory Porter, and James Tormé. Harewood is an advocate of the British government apologising for Britain's participation in the slave trade. Every purchase supports Harewood House Trust, a charity set up to support our conservation and education ambitions, helping more people discover Harewood has to offer. The difference is that we can now finally read openly the impact that racism fear and ignorance had on a young black man in the Seventies ad Eighties in the UK.

I'd originally believed Harewood to be American from the roles I'd seen him play in some excellent TV (I didn't know previously of his extensive theatre repertoire). He appeared in the BBC film adaptation of the Philip Pullman novels The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North, both of which are titles from the Sally Lockhart Mysteries. How did his experiences growing up Black and British contribute to a rupture in his sense of his place in the world? In September 2023, a portrait of Harewood, commissioned by Lascelles, was put on display at Harewood House as an acknowledgement of their families' connected history. As part of a BBC Look North programme in 2007, David Harewood visited Lascelles' ancestral home, Harewood House, which was built with the profits of slavery, and interviewed Lascelles on the subject.

In this memoir, David Harewood is incredibly open when reflecting on his mental health and his experiences with psychosis. You mention in the book that because of your experiences growing up, the sight of the Union Jack still gets your back up a bit, still puts you on edge. Harewood is a mental health ambassador and has been open about his own struggles, confessing that he used to self-medicate with alcohol to deal with his bipolar-like symptoms, discarding the medication given to him by doctors. And I resonate with a detailed assessment of new surroundings each time he found himself in a hotel.
