A note on the length: Portions of Fire and Blood have been published elsewhere, though nowhere else that I have been.As a reader, I've spent years, years, waiting for sequels to books I have enjoyed, only to sometimes see that the sequels are cancelled or eternally postponed after the author loses interest or the publisher does because it was a bust. Over the years, I've built up a small library of maps and so I could print off and keep to hand a map of Westoros but, without being able to refer to it constantly, following the plot in this book would have been all but impossible. These are the histories of all the long dead and crazy Kings and Queens we’ve heard our favourite characters dream about and wish they were. Chronicled by a learned maester of the Citadel, this thrilling and bloody history of Westeros tells the story of where the battle for the Iron Throne began.

What I mean is that the ostensible narrator is not an omniscient GRR Martin but a master writing several centuries after the event and relying on several contemporary sources of dubious accuracy. Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen—the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria—took up residence on Dragonstone. But instead I was enthralled by the richness of the history and the lore associated with the Targaryen dynasty. There are always two sides to every issue, but I can definitely understand how his fans might be annoyed and betrayed when, after waiting years for WINDS OF WINTER, Martin comes out with a 600-plus page tome that's mostly irrelevant to the main story, even though it's set in the same world.

For the three days I spent reading this I forgot the outside world existed as I learnt more about my favourite house. For those who find all this a bit grim and macho, GRR Martin is pretty good at putting women front and centre, so there are plenty of notable female characters, not just doing queenly things, but also doing “manly” things like exploring the seven seas (or however many seas there are in this world) and riding dragons. As annoyed as I am (and as annoyed as many of you are), I urge you to read and enjoy this for what it is. If you do not allow these cookies we will not know when you have visited our site, and will not be able to monitor its performance.Other works set in or about Westeros include The World of Ice and Fire, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. They traditionally symbolize potent and auspicious powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and floods. The parallels to the War of the Roses and politics are probably the best thing about them, as I found the writing subpar, and it appears to degrade as the books go on. The books often make passing reference to historical events that shaped the creation of this world (in this case, the creation of Westeros) without fleshing out those references, and this book seeks to provide the full back story; well, half of it! In terms of the Game of Thrones fandom, I am a dilettante at best and utterly disinterested at worst.
