The audio book narrator mostly did a decent job - except for one thing: Whenever the character was said to be angry, she just sounded like she was about to cry (and not angry-cry, as happens to some people, just sobby-helpless-cry). While there are things about this book that are typical of middle grade fantasy books, I still think it's one of the better ones I've read. None of them are a liability, but instead they form a great team who help each other out along the way. Yet the mysterious disappearance of her best friend, Miles Tanaka, has left her wondering what happened all those years ago.

Despite their friendship not being present for most of the story, the scenes they had together really helped to show their chemistry and years of friendship.Genre classifications are arbitrary and, especially in the speculative fiction regime, largely meaningless. I really enjoyed the no nonsense girl as a lead, who has a best friend and a young brother to take care off.sie rennen weg, aber die Elite ist schon da oder hat sich sofort gefunden und dann gelingt wieder irgendwie die Flucht und zum Schluss sind wir genau da wo wie gestartet sind und die Lösung des Twists hat, dann das ganze wegbrenne unnötig gemacht (außer, dass Mia nun ihre Kräfte kontrollieren kann und keine Angst mehr vor Umbra hat, aber gerade diese beiden Teile wurde mir auch zu einfach gelöst).

I was utterly swept into this breath-taking adventure which has everything I love in epic fantasy: rich world-building; breath-taking peril with a balance of hope; characters who have a close bond of friendship; fascinating, sentient creatures; hidden powers; and, a dark villain who influences from a mystical other world.
